6-Speed Box for 2012?

My brother-in-law is in upper management for a division of Magna.
He just told me they are bidding to supply components for the 6-Speed transmission for Pentastar V6's for various FWD and AWD 2012 models. He said the Grand Cherokee was one of them and Chrysler is selling them like hotcakes!
Any thoughts?

There's vehicles that Chrysler has confirmed will have the new gearbox in 2012. The Grand Cherokee is not one of them. If they decide to use it, it will be a change announced at a rather late time.

The Mercedes based transmission that's coupled with the V6 is a great transmission. What Chrysler needs to do is implement direct injection in the Pentastar. That would increase fuel economy and power/torque.

Well, all I can say is what was told to me. He is in upper management and is involved with the bid process and he says the Grand Cherokee was on the list for a 6-speed.
The only reason that model stuck in his mind is because he knows i'm considering that to replace my H2.

I read that Chrysler plans to market the 5-45 used with the V8 as a '6 speed' next year on the merits of its alternate 2nd gear.

IMO calling it a 5 speed is already exaggeration enough, in terms of its narrow overall range and wide spread between individual gears it's effectively a 4 speed. Alternate gears 200 rpm away from the original really aren't worth much.

Re: 6-Speed Box for 2012?

If Chrysler wanted to market the 545RFE as a 6 speed they'd be doing it now.

There's a lot of speculation over future transmissions. We do know that the Mercedes-sourced W5A580 (currently mated to the Pentastar) will eventually be replaced, and right now the best info we have is that the 2013 model year will be when that happens. Other vehicles are definitely getting the new one for the 2012 MY, and the GC isn't necessarily out of the running for that, but it just isn't looking likely. Possible, but not likely.

As for the 545RFE, it will probably also get replaced, but again, not likely for the next model year. There's some other threads discussing a possible 8 speed box, but it's farther out than the 6 speed.

"Rick – the 545RFE is actually a 6 speed transmission. We are calling it that in 12MY. The six ratios are as follows: 1st – 3.0, 2nd – 1.67, 3rd – 1.5, 4th – 1.0, 5th – 0.75 and 6th – 0.67."

Wow, that's going to bite them in the rear. If they announce it like it's something different, it will detract from when they have something actually different.

And twin turbos. Don't forget the twin turbo!
