Bluetooth Sync with HUGE address book

I have not made my purchase yet, but I do a lot of work via cell. My iPhone4 address book has nearly 3k contacts! Is the JGC really going to try and sync them EVERY time it connects?!?! Can I make this quicker by grouping them somehow? Not all 3k need to show up on Caller ID or whatever.

From what I see it doesn't copy the data but uses the BT data stream to look up contacts and display contact based caller ID.

i think it caches the list not a download, and i think someone said it has a limit of 1000, not sure though

Hey Neo,
I don't yet have my Summit, but I have downloaded the UConnect manuals. . .
If I read correctly, only the first 1000 addresses are sucked in off your smartphone. That creates issues for me too, as I also have a large contact base on iPhone. The UConnect manual states:
"Depending on the maximum number of entries downloaded, there may be a short delay before the latest downloaded names can be used. Until then, if available, the previous downloaded phonebook is available for use."
If you don't use the Automatic Phonebook Transfer feature, you can only manually enter 32 contacts into the UConnect Phone system.
So, I'm going to have to edit my contact list down to under 1K. PITA. Truthfully, most of my contacts are Legacy entries, no longer actually needed for commerce or conversation.

Hey wreckdrive...

I'm with you! While I cannot delete my address book, most are not used regularly. I am hoping I can somehow manually add the ones I use a lot to the JGC address book. I probably call and receive calls from less than 20 regularly.

I have 1,500+ contacts and have had no trouble with my BT on the 430N it doesn't load your contacts to the car it only uses the iphones database for calling and voice recognition.

Cool, good to know. Do you know if the UConnect is seeing all 1500 of your contacts, or is limited to the 1000 as mentioned in the manuals?

Re: Bluetooth Sync with HUGE address book

In my experience with an iPhone (2500 contacts) and the 430n, I have not encountered any practical limitations with accessing or calling any of them. It is probably the most seamless integration of technology that I encounter every time I get into the Jeep. I've stopped thinking about it because my phone syncs so quickly after ignition; it's just there when I push the phone button on the wheel and issue a voice command.

Granted this is only anecdotal and may not apply to the 730n RHR once it hits the market.

This is a subject that's near and dear to my heart as well, as I'm using an hTc Incredible with 1300 contacts, and LIVE by my smart phone! I've got an Overland on order with the new 730 and am dying to see how this is going to work, as I too have read that there's a "limit" of 1,000 contacts.

I will tell you however of a very peculiar/funny story that happened on one of my test drives. I have an app called "Vlingo" that reads my text messages out loud. (Very cool). I was out for a test drive several months ago in a Laredo with an "elderly" car salesman, who seemed to know less about the vehicle than I did. :(

We get in the car, I didn't even Pair the device with the car. Anyhow, a text comes in, and it starts being read aloud over the cars stereo!! The salesman is sitting next to me, looking startled and says "what's that"? I play dumb and say, geesh........I don't know? ha ha ha.

Anyhow, not sure how it did it, but I have a feeling that once I get my Overland, a lot of the stuff is just going to "take care of itself". At least.....I'm hoping it will. ;)

I don't know about any other future JGC buyers, but as one of the iPhone faithful, all the talk about issues has me a little concerned. I am sure the problem will be fixed, but it would be great if someone would post a video of the BT sync and use in action. Has anyone found such a vid on YouTube or wherever? I could not find any.

So far I see nothing to be concerned about. You pair the phone with the radio and it simply works. No issues with phone books, caller ID or call quality.

2 things to note:

1) DO NOT use BT streaming audio with the iPhone (or any phone IMHO, they are phones first and music players second). Because the OS prioritizes phone over everything else the audio quality and performance will be erratic and basically unusable.

2) SMS (text) reading or creation does not seem to work with the iPhone.

If either of these are a deal breaker then so be it. Whining or getting all worked up over it won't change these facts.

Mjw930,

Not whining at all. None of these "issues" would keep from getting a JGC. I am just passing the time while I wait to order. Forums like this pander to the OCD in all of us. That said, it would kind of suck if I can't make the phone aspect work at the very least. Sounds like it will. No worries. Thanks.
