New V6 JK

Hey all!

I was wondering how everyone likes the new 3.8L V6 over the classic inline 6 4.0L? I have a ZJ and a WJ and i am on the prowl for a TJ or JK. Point of this post is to decide which one. I like the power of the 4.0L and the economy of it. Just hoping that the new engine is comparable.

The Wrangler is the type of truck that you have to test drive yourself. The 3.8L is barely suitable for any type of rush hour driving and/or gaining speed on a expressway on ramp. You have NO room for extra power with it. The gas mileage is horrid, with 15/19. Plus you can't tow worth a crap with it. The Wrangler would have been much better off with the 3.7L geared the same way the Liberty is geared. The ride is also harsh to say the least. It rides as if your driving without any shocks, although I had a lot of room in it, I could not over look the ride.

However, if you had a 2nd car that rides great AND you use the Wrangler to go off road then you would be happy with it.

Just my .02

Nobody has ever said they had too much power with the 3.8L V6. On the other hand the 4.0L was no racer either.
If mileage means anything, get a JK. 19mpg is a lot better than the 13-14mpg with the TJ.
As for capability, the Jk is miles ahead of the TJ. (I own a TJ) The longer control arms make the JK much more smooth riding and aggressive on the trail.
If power is an issue for you, have a Hemi installed and quit whinning.

Or just wait a few months and pick up a '12 with the 3.6...should solve a lot of these problems.

Most owners ditch the stock suspension anyway so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

The 3.8 and 4.0 really aren't much different from each other as far as power and fuel economy...I personally would hate to have a wrangler as a daily driver, even with the nice new interior...but it makes a sweet second car. I keep mine at my vacation house and it handles snow pretty well and I am looking forward to cruising around topless (maybe doorless) this summer as well.

The JK is getting the 3.6L? Its about time Jeep made a Wrangler that you don't have to floor it just to merge on to the highway LOL

Thanks for the input guys. It has all been very helpful. I like the idea of a JK with a HEMI, but that would take up too much time. lol I want to drive it this summer and enjoy either a TJ or a JK with the top off. But maybe down the road that does sound like a great project.

Woot! Just make that thing ride a little bit smoother and Jeep may have me in a seat of one of those in the next 3-5 years :D

I was watching 4x4 or trucks (I forgot what show) on spike TV and they had a turbo 3.8L and a 5.7L JK. They claimed with the 1st run of the V6, they got 193HP at the wheels and then they tuned the turbo a bit and made it get 223HP at the wheels. The HEMI just got 213HP at the wheels. I went online to see about the turbo kit for the 3.8L and the kit cost about 5K and I think we all know how much its going to be for the 5.7L

Now to be fair, both Trucks at oversized off road tires and I didn't hear the size of the tires on both of the JK.

There is also a RIPP supercharger for the 3.8 that puts it nearly hemi levels, for a lot less cost than a hemi swap.

I put an AEV 3.5 premium lift on my unlimited, I've only driven it twice since then but the ride is plush...kinda old school Cadillac float...not very sporty, but sporty the jeep isn't anyway.

i had an 07 JK, put 108000km on er before i traded it in, true it don't tow much but it did make a couple of trips thru the mountains with an 8 foot tent trailer, and i find gas milage to be about the same as the 07 WK that i traded er in on, and V6 actually wasn't bad for power, mind you i had a 2 door and 4.10 gearing, had no issues with keeping up to traffic, i liked it and miss it but the WK is soooooo nice...
