Whining loud noise from under the hood

i have this whining noise and it sounds terrible. at idle its not bad but as soon as you give it gas it sounds terrible. it almost drowns out my Magnaflow exhaust. any ideas?

here are three different videos.
watch all three. they are short
(one was filmed at night so its dark)

Looks like a steering pump whine. Did you check the fluid level?

i have the same whine. i had steering problems before. the gasket on the high pressure return hose wore out. i had it all replaced but still hear that whine. im def interested if you find any solutions.

Re: Whining loud noise from under the hood

i have read some things about the fluid in it but im not sure. people say it HAS to be mopar due to the type of fluid but im not sure.

this is from www.wjjeep.com
this is the warning from the power steering section

MoparŪP/N 04883077 Hydraulic fluid / Power steering fluid (MS5931)
MS5931 IS THE ONLY FLUID THAT CAN BE USED FOR THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Important note:
The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a “topping off” fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using ONLY the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is NOT an approved Power Steering Fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.

is there an easy way to drain all the fluid?

No that I'm aware of. I've been know to turkey baster out as much as I can and top off with fresh fluid every so often.
The only other way I can think of would be to disconnect hoses and drain that way.

Re: Whining loud noise from under the hood

If the whine is coming from the hydraulic pump and the fluid level is ok, most probably its the pump itself. No idea what will be wrong inside the pump and how long it will last.
I did change my steering/cooling fan fluid some time ago and just removed a hose (donīt remember which one:rolleyes:) to get all fluid out. Donīt let it run without fluid to avoid damaging the pump. After filling you have to make 10 full steerings to bleed the system. When you also have the hydraulic cooling fan feature, just remove the engine cooling liquid sensor connector ( in between the A/C compressor and alternator) to have the fan go to full speed, and to add in bleeding.
Regarding the fluid, iīm using a locally available synthetic fluid without any problems.

i ended up replacing the oring on the high pressure hose from the pump to the fan and still have the noise. No more leak! thats a plus!

crazy thing i have the loud whine too. mine is even coming after a new pump installed, its been making noise since it was new not too sure why but all still works. and i run the mopar fluid in it..

Re: Whining loud noise from under the hood

Are you sure the whine is from the steering pump and not from the serpentine belt or belt tensioner? When the belt is stretched too far, the tensioner can not keep the tension on the belt anymore and it will slip, making a loud noise, especially when accelerating and/or high humidity conditions. Also good to check the condition of the tensioner pully bearings, because after long time use they become without grease and start making a noise. At the end they can seize and the pulley will be destroyed or serpentine belt will break.

Re: Whining loud noise from under the hood

the oring ended up tearing. but i noticed fluid build up on a different part of the hose so i took it off to examine it further. i have a new belt on it and the tensioner seems fine. i had someone push on the gas while i was under the hood and it was coming from the pump. im gonna drain all the fluid while im doing this.
