hemi tick or.....not?

:detailer:
after my hemi idles for 3-4 min it sounds like a lifter is bad it wont do it on start up or after it has run for awhile but it sounds terrible for about ten min at idle,i crawled under my jeep today after i changed the oil and the sound comes from the bottom end on passanger side, any comments or suggestions would help alot before i take it to the dealer at 120$ an hr

well i can say i have the exact same problem.. couldn't say if its hemi-tick or not, but the jeep runs great so im really not too worried about it. if i were you i'd go to the dealer and try working around paying them and just ask to speak to a tech there, maybe he can tell you if it's a common issue and what the fix is. don't know if they'll do that for ya but worth a try. is your jeep under warranty? its only 3 years old..

I have had that ticking sound my engine is fine. As long as you are leaking oil losing alot of oil you are fine.

yeah i don't blame ya there lol. $2,800 is rediculous you could almost buy a new engine for that. i've heard that if your manifold is a little loose it would let some noise through, check the bolts maybe there's a gap. are you leaking lots of water around where the noise is coming from?

Thats the "tick" drove me nuts the 1st few weeks. My dealer said they ALL do it. I think it's been around long enough that it should be cured by now,but that's just my $0.02

May be just coincidence, but I changed from dino oil to full synthetic (5W-20 of course) at 36K miles. It happens to be Castrol Syntec, because WalMart sells it for $21 in a 5-qt jug, but the brand is probably not the reason. Just that it is synthetic.

"HEMI tick" is greatly diminshed since I switched. Most noticeable only at cold start in the morning. :werd:

My 2 cents worth.

no i just changed it with mobil 5000,synthetic at 7qts is pricey but if quiets it down i might try it can i go back to conventional? and ill check the manifold

Re: hemi tick or.....not?

the only oil that would quiet down engine noise is the thick stuff, like throwin a quart of lucas in there. which im against adding anything into my engine that isn't what the motor calls for. i've used sythetic blend 5w20 ever since i've owned it and its just fine. so before you go spend $50+ on oil i'd check the other things first, and i've heard not to change back from sythetic but i've also heard thats a myth lol.

Mine has made the exact same ticking sound, from the same place, under the same conditions since the first week I had it. Over 100,000 miles, still ticks.

As everyone says, you do get used to it and it doesn't seem to be anything to worry about.

Re: hemi tick or.....not?

Dont add anything to thicken up the oil ,it'd probibaly be worse with the MDS than thicker weight oil. As for synthetic oil walmart has it for under $25 /5 qt jug then like $6 and change for the next 2 qts
