$#! My Dealer Says

Thought this thread had at least some potential to be informative, if not just hilariously entertaining! Here's my first contribution:

Dealer says, "There's no promotion in place right now for the Summit, so it's this price on the order. But don't worry -- the actual price you'll pay will be determined by whatever promotions are in play when your vehicle comes in".

We'll see how he really feels about that when I show them my (new) Tread Lightly certificate next week.

I almost feel sorry for these guys. . . almost! :)

^^^ You really should make sure the dealer knows about your intention to use affiliate pricing as soon as possible...it will avoid a misunderstanding. Dealers don't have to participate....the TL is not a "promotion" per se. Even with TL, you still get any additional promotions at the time of the sale...... I'd hate to wait 2+ months on an order only to find out the dealer doesn't participate in the affiliate program.

Re: $#! My Dealer Says

I suppose my point was: I have never known a car salesman to offer any better deal after the contract has been signed. Then again, this is my first Chrysler product. I took the salesman's comment to be disingenuous at best, or utter BS at worst. I won't mind being wrong!

I wasn't going to push on the affiliate deal -- I only found out about it recently, and I don't feel "right" springing stuff on people like that. . . but I sure m going to mention it to see what they say!

The bottom line is its not the dealer's loosing the money it's Chrysler. I don't see why the dealer wouldn't honor the Tread Lightly discount of -1% below MSRP. All they have to do is the paperwork and the $75 processing fee is added to the purchase price of the vehicle and they lose nothing...they (the dealer) just made another sale.

Actually the salesman is correct. If you order a car or are waiting for one to come in, you are entitled to the incentives offered at the time of delivery NOT the time of order. So if your jeep doesn't arrive until April 1 and Chrysler is offering newincentives at that time you can get them.

I don't know for sure but dealers are usually entitled to an administrative fee from the manufacturer when they sell a unit that qualifies for affiliate pricing. At least ford stores are...maybe that is what the $75 fee is for on the tread lightly. Keep in mind that even at 1% below invoice they are probably still making their holdback on that unit, let alone any volume bonuses they get for selling a certain number of units each month, not to mention the documentation fee (varies by market) which is pure profit, or financing and warranty commissions. Oh and don't forget the money they will make on your trade! Trust me, there is ALWAYS a way for them to make money on the deal.

The dealership was dead yesterday when I got my new JGC so I spent some time talking finance with the finance dude. He said Chrysler gives them $450 for Friends and Family and affiliate pricing. They are also a Chevy dealer and GM gives them basically nothing anymore.

That confirms what our dealer told us... It is not a zero sum game for the dealer accepting the affiliate pricing.

IMHO you should always represent yourself as being eligible for Preferred Pricing from the beginning. Negotiating to the point of placing an order to then "spring" the TL discount on them days or weeks AFTER you have a deal is in very poor taste. Sorry if that offends you but that's the way I feel having worked both sides of this street.

Agreed, so no offense taken :). I had placed my order before joining this forum, and learning SO MUCH about the world of Jeep and Chrysler. . . There's nothing I can really "spring" on or demand from the Dealer, since they do have a signed sales order from me. . . but I can ask, right? All they can do is say "no" (well, they can say "yes" if they want to!). Nothing is ever lost by asking for a better deal.

I used to get any Ford-Lincoln-Jaguar-Volvo products on the "family" Z Plan, and Dealers couldn't have cared less about my price -- they were still getting spiffed from Ford, and the sales guy had a number to add to his monthly tally. Win-win-win.

I agree. I would just put it up front and tell them that's your starting point. If they can beat it then great.
