Huge Shipping Delays \ Railcar shortages

I just came back from my dealer and he painted a grim view of future deliveries of new Overlands \ Summits due to shortages of railcars. He told me not to expect mine on 3-31-11 as estimated because he has orders 3-4 weeks late due to railcar shortages. He sounded very frustrated. So all of you in D1 (like me) may have to add several weeks (maybe a month) to your deliveries. I hope not, but this was the first time he was negative about deliveries.

I assume this is for people who's truck is not yet built or actually on a rail car.

I actually agree with the dealer for setting realistic expectations but orders seem to be getting through the process now faster than ever? (Didn't say "fast", just faster)

Perhaps this is due to orders/sales of the new GC exceeding Chrysler's estimates?

Hopefully they can remedy this situation with the shipping company asap.

If they're built in MI would there still be a lengthy delay to be shipped to Chicago?

The bottleneck is clearly at the Jefferson plant in MI. Sometimes at the Toledo, OH plant (just outside michigan). Once the railcar is loaded and out of town the process becomes similar to shipping anything else.

^^^^ I agree. Not sure why railcars are in short supply unless people are living in them or something......rail traffic isn't up to the levels they were before and obviously new car sales are down so no shortage on specialized rail cars. Any shipping delay would delay all GCs not just Overlands and Summits.

I would say, from the ones I have been watching in transit, a 4 week in transit time is probably too pessimistic.

To alleviate the railcar problem....why not adopt my idea of allowing people to pick up their vehicle at the factory (or nearest dealership to the factory) and let them save $600 (of the $780) while doing it??? That would get more stock to the dealers faster too...... Just an idea...I know I would have picked mine up.

The vehicle tracking data confirms the mess they have with moving the cars out of Detroit.

I am pretty convinced that most of us who went into D-1 on the 11th are not going to see our vehicles until the 1st week in May....

Could be time for Plan B....

Well, on one hand the D1 to built and KZ is going faster. On the other hand the shipping times may be worse negating the quick build and release. I wouldn't get all hung up on the POTENTIAL shipping delays....by the time you get to KZ they may have figured out a solution such as transporting them to a different shipping origin rail yard. Given all the other issues...I would think this is a simple one to solve. With that said, if you find one on the lot...go for it!

That's exactly my plan B. I found one exactly to my spec being delivered tomorrow. Only problem is the lot is 900 miles away. But I could have it by next weekend and it would be a beautiful drive home....!

slampert - Did you talk to the dealership yet? What was it you were looking for?

The salesman I worked with over the weekend showed me his computer screen and their custom build orders are currently averaging more than 4 weeks shipping time.

It's the exact Summit I ordered (4x4/V8/RHR) and I found it last Thurs--the day before the large group of us went D-1 ! Ironic huh !

CA emissions compliance was the big concern and I lucked out there. I gave them a deposit and we agreed to firm the deal tomorrow when the truck actually arrives at the dealer. No suprises. The dealership has been super cooperative and very communicative.

Anyway, looks like it's finally showtime !

Steve
