Come and Go "loose" rattle
Hi i have a weird one.

our 2000 wj started to develop a odd noise last night.
on the way home i started hearing a weird (faint) noise like a loose pulley.
then it went away. went out this am and checked the engine over with the motor running and nothing looks loose. drove the truck and after a littyle while the noise came back ( a little louder) i shifted into neutral, reved the motor and the noise stayed but didnt change.

it happens at part throttle or a constant speed

HELP! im lost and ideas?

Re: Come and Go "loose" rattle
Anytime I hear "rattle" I automatically think "catalytic converter". What motor?

Re: Come and Go "loose" rattle
Its a 4.7. the odd thing is it sounds like a front brake pad is sticking. i can hear the brake pad sound while driving but just looking at all the rotors none look bad or like th rivets hitting a rotor... might be able to get under the jeep and look at the inside of the rotors this weekend. still to muddy in the drive.

Re: Come and Go "loose" rattle
Will the sound change a bit or disappears when you touch the brake pedal gently? It can be that the sliding pins are dry or corroded and that the caliper will not return after braking.

Re: Come and Go "loose" rattle
Does it appear only when the Jeep is warmed up? If so, I'd suspect the exhaust even more. Maybe a rattling heat sheild, or a hanger gave and now something is touching. Sounds like you need to get under there with a good light.

It's a mudpit here too...thank gawd I have a garage to roll around in.

Re: Come and Go "loose" rattle
Your waterpump will make a rattle noise when the bearing goes out. if you grab your fan (the mechanical one) and wiggle the fan, if the fan moves and the pully moves AT ALL you need a waterpump (reguardless of if its this concern or not ;) just putting that out there)...

One thing that you may, want to do to verify is loosen the tensioner, this will take pressure off the w/p pulley and allow a better visual on the pulley moving or not.

As mentioned, there are plenty of other things that can rattle though.

Re: Come and Go "loose" rattle
doesnt matter of the Jeep is warmed up or not. the noise doesnt change if you touch the brakes, but it does go away if you stop moving. the water pump does move a little, but i have NEVER heard the noise when the Jeep isnt in motion. our drive way is a lake (spring thaw in wisconsin) right now ill try to get under the jeep this weekend.

Re: Come and Go "loose" rattle
Check your front driveshaft.

Just grab it and see if it wiggles either at the splines or the U-Joints. It shouldn't have any play.

No problem... If it's the U-Joints it's not that hard to do yourself.

What T-Case do you have?
