I'm new to the jeep garage and joined to help me with my 1999 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I am a DIY guy and have been having an intermittent starting problems and was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction to get this problem resolved. Sometimes it starts right up with no problems and other times it just cranks. If I turn the key off twice it will always start on the third try and initially runs a little rough until the fuel clears out.
Can someone give me any ideas what could be causing this problem?

4.0 or 4.7?
I had a similar issue on my 4.0L XJ...here's the story:
It had a newer red top Optima, NEW oversized battery and starter cables, and was maintained beyond sanity. Sometimes it would start, sometimes it wouldn't. My initial thought was to test the battery and the starter. So I did. Battery tested fine. Took the starter off and over to Advance Auto where they bench tested it and told me it was fine. Put it back in...started chasing fuel, ignition switch, sensors, you name it. Nothing came back faulty. I had a suspicion and bought a new starter and installed it. Problem solved.
Lesson learned: Fat guy at Advance has probably never been under a vehicle in his life. Pimply-faced kid working at his side probably knows even less. I should have known better when niether one of these 2 idiots was able to properly clamp the starter down in the tester.
Check all your cables at their connction points and clean them with water and baking soda if they are dirty. Use an old toothbrush and wear gloves. Then spray with a battery terminal protectant. IF that doesn't clear it up, I'd test the battery and the starter at a REPUTABLE place.
