Holder for cell phone?

While waiting on my Summit (due 4/6/11, hopefully), I made my weekly journey (not really weekly but feels like it) to the Jeep dealership on sunday. They're closed Sunday so it's nice not to deal with the sales folks as i ordered it from another dealership.

anyway, a bunch of the GC's were unlocked so the wife and i sat in them admiring the beauty. as i was sitting there, i realized there isn't a great place to put the cell (iPhone 4 in my case). does anyone have a good place other than the cupholders to put their cell phone? a holder or something?

I leave my cell phone in my pocket/holster. There's just no need to remove it with the Bluetooth capabilities. If I need to charge it, I'll stick it in a cupholder or the center console (having the charging cable in the lower dash cupboard takes up too much space with the iPod cable on the RER, but isn't a factor with any other unit).

Try out pro-clip, I've had them in my last 3 cars. I just got my GC last week and haven't decided which mount I want.

I ended up getting frustrated with the 730N (RHR)'s crappy iPhone 4 support that I ended up just grabbing buying an older iPod Touch off of Craigslist and shoved it into the center console... so my phone usually just stays in my pocket.

To charge it, I plug it into the front console and usually close the door on it because I don't want it to fly around in an accident. My Summit came about because a guy in an F150 decided to merge into me at 65mph, and the thing I remember the most about that accident is my iPhone flying out of the cupholder and slamming through the windshield. I still can't figure out the physics to explain how it ended up doing that.. (I highly recommend the iSkin Solo case, btw.. the iPhone worked fine after the accident, with no glass damage.. even after bouncing at least 10 feet down I-85).

You'd be surprised how many G's you pull during the actual impact. You dont notice them because it only last for milliseconds but its enough inertia to launch the phone. Happened to me too. Got rear ended in Dec. by a bronco and I had an explorer. Totaled my truck hence why my Summit is on order as well. Bronco only had a bent bumper......;0(

Usually my phone stays in my pocket and I rely on UConnect-Phone to handle the controls. When I need to charge I do so in the front compartment. Sometimes it can be annoying when trying to fish the phone out of there though and if my wife sticks her phone in there too there's a lot of stuff that can bump and grind up against each other.

My solution involved a combination of...

... one of these...

... one of these...

... and two of these...

The phones sit in the business card holder on their sides and are easy to grab. Two phones will fit nicely. I stuck some rubber pads on the bottom of the holder to keep it from sliding around but the rubber tray insert in the compartment does a good job all by itself. Everything gets tucked into the compartment nice and tidy. Close the door and no one will know they're in there. Only problem is when you have walked away and suddenly realised you left your phone in the Jeep.

Really? Maybe there is a software update....I am running the latest iOS on my iPhone 4 and have a recent RHR (presumably with latest software updates too) and my iPhone works fine both plugged in the center and wireless via Bluetooth to play music.

I have an iPhone 4 and the RHR radio you are getting. The RHR offers effortless connectivity with the iPhone including full address book sync so the phone stays in my pocket.

Be aware that the Apple supplied USB to iphone cable connects but does not work to charge the iPhone using either the center console USB plug, or the USB plug on the faceplate of the radio.

I have a 12v charger cable (with a cigarette lighter to iPhone plug) that does work to charge the phone. I leave it in the cubby (lower part of center stack) as the 12V interface in the cubby is accessory powered. The 12v interface in the center console might be more conveniently located but is constantly powered. I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of leaving a powered accessory pluggedin 24/7....

Hope this helps.

^^^ You sure the USB doesn't charge the iPhone 4? I could have sworn when I tried it that the phone showed the charging icon in the upper right corner. Will have to check it out again....mine was plugged into the center armrest USB port.
