Oil Change at 3500 mi---What the h$%&

Okay, my EVIC tells me that an oil change is due--GC is a little over 2 months old with 3500 miles, well below the 8000 mile change interval in the OM. Oil looks pretty good, still a nice caramel color, few suspended solids. Most of the miles have been on the freeway.

My ML350 would easily go 12K driving the same route before calling for a change. What is the chance that the sensor(s) are malfunctioning? I'd hate to think I'm looked into a oil change at 3K intervals.

A lot of us have the oil changed at 3000 mile or before just because it is the first time.

It's up to you of course.

I had mine done at 3K and intend to have it done every 6K from now on. Lots of folks will do it more often but for me 2000 before the required 8000 works.

First oil change interval is not an indication of future oil change intervals. My dealer said 3K miles for first (and free) and 6K+ after that...no biggie.

Did mine at 1000 km changed to 100% synthetic

It's conventional oil, so yeah change it! You shouldn't be doing more than 3500-4000 miles on conventional oil. Your asking for trouble running it longer. If you want longer oil change intervals and better protection, switch to a synthetic.

I had same EVIC first oil change notice at 3,500 and swapped to syn. Chryco recommends traditional petro oils, dealer service manager who owns a 2010 Hemi personally recommended syn. He also said that 2,500-3,500 mile increments not unusual for more demanding winter and/or major elevation driving conditions here in CO. As others suggest above, should also elongate with break in and/or syn oil.

that how much per mile a $50 oil change costs with a 6K mile interval. if thats a burden I guess you ARE better off with an overpriced model that cost more.....

Not sure what the price has to do with it. It's a pain to have to change the oil or have it changed, especially if you put a lot of miles on quickly.

I keep it simple and just follow the manual.....

The manual has standard service interval at 8000 miles. Apparently, the vehicle computer will analyze your driving style and trigger the oil change notification earlier if it feels that you may warrant a more intensive service interval.

Mine seems to be on the 8K mile interval, and that's what I'll go with. Oil today is better than oil in the past, and with a 6qt crankcase in the V-6, I have no reason to believe that changing it more often than required will gain me anything. Sure, I *could* change it every 3000 for not that much money, but I just don't believe that it will matter. Might as well change every 1500 miles if that's the case- it's not that much more, after all.

This is just wrong. You're throwing money (and good oil) down the [oil] drain by changing this often. Do as the manual says...
