Damp smell?
I've noticed on a couple occasions, a damp, "wet dog" type smell coming out of the vents. It seems like there may be moisture in the airducts or something. My brother said he had a similar problem with his Volvo, and then they activated "after blow," which turns on the fans for a while after he gets out of the car, and it fixed his problem. Anyone know if the TSB for the HVAC solves this problem? Anyone else notice this?

I have smelled that wet dog smell a couple times too but I couldn't pinpoint it because it dissipated fast.

I have only had my wk2 10 days.

I noticed it also. My window would be fogged up a little on the inside above the defroster vents too. It was a week after owning it but has stopped for now. The Dodge ram had that problem for a few guys and they just ran the fan for a few before shutdown.(No AC just fan)

Re: Damp smell?
Yeah I get it when the weather starts getting warmer. I usually run the fan on med and cycle through the zones and spray anti mold/mildew spray into the intake right below the windshield on. The passenger side. Or you can use Lysol but then you have the smell. But from what I hear the in cabin micro filter helps eliminate that v

Re: Damp smell?
I would suspect you have a drainage problem, blocked or kinked drain tube from the AC evaporator compartment.

After you shut down do you see a small puddle under the car?
You should if the drain is working!

Re: Damp smell?
I have the puddle but I still get the smell. I think cause I rarely run the AC in the summer. Not to save gas but I like the feel on the wind blowing with all windows down and sunroof open and music on blast! LOL

Re: Damp smell?
The dealers have a process that they can "deodorize" the HVAC systems. I had to have this done with my Limited, they also changed the cabin filter. After that I've never had another issue.

Re: Damp smell?
This has happened to some of our vehicles over the years, especially around the beginning of spring when temps have wild swings. I usually changed out the HVAC air filters on the vehicles that had them to fix the smell. None of our current vehicles including our WK2 have a smell (knocks on wood trim). To help prevent HVAC smells, after you run the AC a lot try running the system vents at full blast with the AC off for the last block of your trip to clear out the heat exchanger if you plan on parking for several days.

For stubborn wet dog syndrome, it may take more work. A few older vehicles we had without filters were only fixed by running ozone gas through the HVAC intake for several minutes to saturate the ducting. Then, the intake & vents were sealed for ~24hrs after which fresh air was run for a while to clear out the ozone. It worked well.

A cheap method you might try is running the AC with the temp set to 90 (i.e. full hot) for an extended trip with the windows open; heat can sometimes cook off the smell and it may need several extended runs. It is not as effective as a new filter and a blast of ozone. Good luck!

Re: Damp smell?
Or just go to your dealer and tell them you want the system deodorized.... It's free and they should install a new cabin filter. My dealer did no guestions asked.

Yes, I get that wet dog smell sometimes. Still no idea why.

Haha to the above post..

But in all seriousness I just noticed this smell now as we start using heat in our jeep.. Just every once in a while a wet dog type smell for a split second or 2.. Then it goes away..

Re: Damp smell?
This was happening to me, but as soon as I changed out my cabin air filter the smell went away. IF you change out your filter and the smell doesn't go away(happened to me once), what I did was this--

Take cabin air filter out
Pop hood, and spray lysol down the HVAC air intake right below the windshield
Run your heat for about 5 minutes(on fresh mode) after you spray the lysol, then run it on recirculation for a few more minutes. I sometimes spray a little more while the heat is running full blast.
Usually after I do this, I then run some cold air through the system(I don't know why, just habit I suppose).
Repeat as many times as necessary to get bad/damp smell out.
Put new filter in.
Breathe in that fresh air
