Towing noise

Q: Has anyone towed a trailer with their WK2 yet?

I towed my trailer this weekend about 90 miles across paved roads and dirt roads and found it to be really really noisy. The trailer was empty and I know it is normally a little louder when empty but it sounded like the trailer was going to rip the tow hitch off the back of the vehicle.

Well actually it sounded like the post was too small for the receptacle and it was banging around. I have used this hitch and ball for years on my H3 and never noticed any noise before. It is a 2 inch trailer hitch mount with a 5 inch drop and if I read correct on the WK2 is a 2 inch receptacle.
I was thinking about dipping the hitch mount in some liquid rubber just to pad it a bit.
Q: Has anyone else found the tow to be real loud?
NOTE: I did try the tow/haul for a little while but really did not see much change other than never going into ECO and less than normal fuel consumption. My guess is it will be more useful when I am out on the range and have the trailer filled with the other off road and on trial toys.

Re: Towing noise

Towed my snowmobile all winter with no noise or vibration. I have the V6 (no tow/haul). I used a 2" drop with 2" ball. Total weight about 1200lbs (trailer and sled). No brakes on trailer.

There was a earlier post with the same issue and someone had a special clamp to eliminate vibrations.

Search this forum and sub-forums for towing - I think there was a thread just about this and about the solution.

There are clamps designed to reduce the hitch rattle. However, here's my 2 cent solution... Take a drywall screw and screw it into one of the corners between the ball mount and the hitch receptacle. This will take up any slack that is causing the rattle. No more rattle.

I did some digging and found this one at www.hitchrider.com that was mentioned as a good fix.
Many said they were going to get one so I was wondering if anyone tried it and does it work?

Here's another option. I own it but have not used it.

What you are hearing is normal on a unibody vehicle. You don't hear it nearly as much in a body on frame vehicle like the H3 or a pickup truck.

Any of the above solutions will work and in addition, there are some specialty ball mounts and pins that do the same thing.

I use the softride ball mount and it solves the problem perfectly. Mine was very noisy when towing an unloaded trailer.

Aluminum or steel and how big of a drop? Think I may pick one up.. Does it come with a wrench, my Thule bike rack has a similar anti rattle and came with a small wrench too. Thanks!
