Another "What is this?" thread - tape edition

I was wiping down the door jams after washing last night and noticed something odd. Can anyone explain to me what the deal is with the small piece of clear plastic tape on the lower right corners of the inside of the doors? There's a piece at each door, and it looks like it covers a small notch in the stamping. I would have thought maybe it was to prevent dirt and gunk from getting gummed up in the notch, but it looks like the inside of the clear tape is already mucked up with dirt and gravel. The OCD detailer in me wasn't pleased.

^^^ I am guessing it is a vent/drain so that if water/moisture gets inside the door via the window it can drain out/breath a bit. I'm petty sure my 2005 GC had the same thing with the clear tape. Never examined it super close though...

I think it lets water/moisture drain out but keeps gravel and dirt from plugging up the hole.

The water specialist at the dealer; when my Jeep went in to find the leak; mentioned that I should remove the clear tape on the doors to let any water out that accumulates from the rain going down the window. He said water will build up eventually and start to rot the inside door and its not covered under warranty. I never removed them yet I actually forgot until now.

Each door (Driver Side front & rear and Passenger Side Front & Rear) have two drainage slots (rectangular) at the bottom corners of each door. The slots are covered with a clear tape with a hole in the center. Just pull the tape off and you are good to go. The Dealer should have removed the tape when they prepped the vehicle for delivery.

I'll have to really examine the tape to see if permanent or temporary. For some reason I thought the tape stays..........

Can anyone authoritatively say the tape should have been removed at dealer prep?????????????????????????????

+1 they are weep holes. Ok to pull them, or if you are OR a ton then leave em on until/if you see moisture, then let it out.

Just back from the garage... My tapes were gunky on the adhesive side too so off they came. I suspect from how easily they tore off that they would have come off on their own soon anyway. I am all for "drainage".

I learn something everytime I log onto this site!

Thanks for the heads up. My doors only had the tape on the rear slots. The front slots looked like they may have never been taped. Good info all.

All four door have the tape and the tape also has a hole in it.....so leaving it on for now. If I recall my other vehicles had the tape on there too. With the hole in the tape there would still be drainage so still scratching my head over whether the tape should be removed or not....

Actually the tape is there to prevent dirt from clogging the holes kicked up from the road or off road use. It is normal to have the tape there and most manufactures use the same design. Water will drain as the tape isn't designed to hold the water weight. Plus the tape has drain holes built in. The tape also serves in reducing wind noise.

The "water specialist" knows nothing about the design, if he really thought that why didn't he remove them himself, lol
