check engine light code wont display on 06 3.7

I have an 06 Cherokee with the 3.7 and the check engine light came on the other day. Tried pulling the code by cycling the key and the code wont display. I also tried taking it to a local auto parts store and had them plug the scan tool into it and all it would do was come up with an error message. Anyone have any idea why I cant pull the codes?

Try reseting the comp. unplug BOTH battery cables for aprox. 15 min. then reconnect and wait about 50 miles for the reset to complete. if the engine light come on right after the reconnection or any time after, take it to a dealer.

I ended up taking the Jeep to a diffrent auto parts store and they were able to pull the code. Its getting code P0430 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 2. Is that a deffinate cat problem, or should I look into the o2 sensors also?

Unscrew your O2 sensor and see if it's gunked up. if so, clean and see if that fixes it. might be a defective O2 sensor, or a bad cat. PROB the sensor/wiring..

I just had the P0430 code pop up yesterday. Bank 2. 06Cherokeeman, did you ever track down the source of your problem? I would really like to get some additional information about the issue before I take it to the dealer. I know their solution is going to be the expensive route, ie new cats, so I want to do a little research before bringing it to them. I have a small dent in my cat that's been there for the last 60k miles. Slight rust issues due to winters in the northeast, but nothing excessive.

Has anyone with the 3.7 had success with replacing the cats with Magnaflow cats instead? The jeep isn't going to be around for another 10+ years, so I'm just trying to save a few $$$ over the OEM cats.

I may try to clear the code and see if it comes back. I mostly do highway driving (70+ mph), do my own oil changes with full synthetic (5 qts, no overfilling), and have no exhaust leaks that I know of. What's the first thing I should do from hear? I will probably spend some time researching O2 sensors before looking further into the cats.

I have a '06 GC w/ the 3.7. I have a code p0420, that happened after a misfire. After extensive research and not wanting to spend $$$ on the oem cats, I decided to replace the o2 sensors because it was cheap($50 for 2 from Rock Auto). and if it didn't work, the vehicle needed it anyway.
Well it did not fix the problem- the code came back. The code p0420 and p0430 means the cat is not working properly. You can try an aftermarket unit- either the cat alone or the complete front pipe. Either way, there is a good chance that the code will return and the way the warranties are written for them, you probably will not be able to get it covered. And if you go with the aftermarket front pipe, you will most likely have problems with the fit. So it is best to go w/ the oem part to guarantee no problems.
My problem happened 3 months ago, and I am finally going to order the oem pipe this week.
By the way- there are many other options for buying oem parts other than your local dealer. Do a search for Jeep oem parts and you will find companies as well as dealers that sell parts at a significant discount. For example, the pipe and cats that you and I need retails for approx $1100. I found a local company that sells it for $820.
Good Luck!

I think I'm going to try ordering a Magnaflow direct fit replacement. If that doesn't work, I'll go down the path of OEM. I have been reading some mixed results about success with going aftermarket. I'll keep this thread updated with my results.

Or just get dummy O2 sensors
