Jeep completely died while driving today. PLEASE HELP

Everything was running fine, ran some errands. We started to slow down to make the turn into our neighborhood and the jeeps RPMs just completely dropped, the jeep sputtered and the jeep died right then and there. I have not received any codes. After 15 minutes of cranking and not turning over I was finally able to get it started and drive it the 100 yds to my house. The Jeep has oil in it and I could not push it as I was on a main road at almost the top of a hill so I could not see oncoming traffic. After I got home I was able to start the jeep again but within seconds just completely died, it did this twice and I have not started it again since. Please help

start it up and then remove the negative terminal from the battery. if it shuts right off then the alternator is dead.

Sorry I have a 99 jeep grand cherokee and after cycling the key I got a P0320 code. My check engine light NEVER came on until I started cycling the key. I hope this helps.

Re: Jeep completely died while driving today. PLEASE HELP

Thank you everyone, I had just found the code after I had gotten home and asked on the forum. It looks like the crankshaft position sensor needs replaced. I think their are actually 2 different P0320 codes a P0320 and a P0320M I got the 1 without the M. I will look to see if this is something I can fix myself.

Jeep is an inline V6

Re: Jeep completely died while driving today. PLEASE HELP

A little update, I had the car towed to pepboys and the guy said to replace my CPS was going to be right at $175 and I was ok with that. One of the people who work there called me after the Jeep was towed in and told me that because the car will not start they have to run a "no start" diagnostic program because I may have gotten the P0320 code from something else going wrong which caused that code to get thrown. The guy said that the diagnostic is $89 and if they do not find anything with the that diagnostic they have to run a different diagnostic which will be another $89. I am not sure if the guy is trying to bleed me dry or not. Will the car not start if the CPS is dead? The car cranks perfectly, just does not start. Should I just have the CPS replaced to see if this alleviates the issue for the original quote of $175? I do not know alot about cars and do not wish to be taken for a ride (no pun intended) Are places like pep boys shady in the sense that if I choose to only have the CPS replaced that they might intentionally mess something else up on purpose just to get me back?

Re: Jeep completely died while driving today. PLEASE HELP

Yes, when the PCM doesn´t receive the signal from the CPS, it will not start. It needs this information for ignition timing and for the fuel injection timing.
If it was me, i would start by changing the CPS, this was given by the DTC P0320.

The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is mounted
to the transmission bellhousing at the left/rear side
of the engine block (Fig. 6). The sensor
is adjustable

and is attached with one bolt. A wire shield/router is
attached to the sensor (Fig. 6).
New replacement sensors will be equipped with a
paper spacer glued to bottom of sensor. If installing
(returning) a
used sensor to vehicle, a new paper
spacer must be installed to bottom of sensor. This
spacer will be ground off the first time engine is
started. If spacer is not used, sensor will be broken

the first time engine is started.

Oh, and just as a site note, the engine is or an inline 6 or a V6, an inline V6 doesn´t exist. Inline means, as the word already says, all 6 cilinders in one line and if it was a V6, you would have 2 times 3 cilinders in a V shape. Your WJ has an inline 6.

Recommendations: Change both the cam and the crank sensor. The both run on the same 5v reference and same signal lines to and from the pcm.

Don't pay them a dime to change the crank position sensor! It seriously has only 1 bolt holding it in.
