Starter woes 4.7 WK

So i took my wife out for our anniversary this weekend. We were about 2 hours away from home. We made a pit stop along the way at her uncles house for lunch yesterday.

When we went to leave to go to our hotel we piled ourselves and the baby in to the jeep and went to start it up. **** Click, click. But its not the battery. Everything has power, the battery is only 6 months old and it was quite obvious the click was coming front the starter.

I tried to give the starter a tap with a hammer while having the key turned but that did nothing. Still have full battery power. I continued to try and start it and then aggressivly turned the key and held it a few times until it tried turning over, did it one more time and it started right up.

All i can think of is the starter is going and has a dead spot in it or some how the teeth on the starter gear were not meshing well with the fly wheel and it was just bad luck that it happened the way it did.

Now though i am afraid of getting stranded else where.

Any ideas?

Wow i am terrible at spelling titles of threads. LOL

Thanks, my starter was deff trying to work i just think its getting time for replacement or like i said just a bad meshing of gears. I dunno. Hopefully if it happens again it will be local and not on the 11th when i have to drive 1.5 hours for an interview at 7 am LOL.

i would replace it ASAP so you dont get stranded. i wish i was able to crawl under mine to try and get it going...... i had to pay like $150 for a tow

I will get one this week. I want a mopar starter and Mopar parts america has them for $70 plus a $40 core and shipping so i might actually be able to get it cheaper at the stealership. i dont want some auto zone junk.

I have AAA+, for the $40 a year its worth the 100 miles of free towing.

My biggest concern about doing the starter is changing it out. It looks really tight in there so thats why i made a thread to see if anyone has any pointers or write ups on how to do it.

i had my mechanic do it, it was too tight for me to work on and my jeep was too low with the skirts and such

In my other thread someone dropped the front diff down a bit and had room to get it done. I also have some ramps and jacks i can use for extra crawl room. I just need to buy one first.

that is what my mechanic had to do as well, i think he charged me 1.5 hours of labor. i bought the starter from my jeep dealer, i lucked out and they had it in stock.
