Recent MPGs on a Weekend Trip

This past weekend was a friends Bachelor Party/Golf Outing in Ocean City, MD and I was nominated as driver.

I filled up Friday afternoon w/ regular (87 Octane) prior to picking everyone up.

I had 4 guys with overnight bags & golf clubs and two coolers of beer with ice.

412 miles round trip
108 of which were stop-and-go driving through the county when picking everyone up and in OC, MD and lower Delaware (Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach) to restuarants and golf courses.

304 were predominantly highway but - and anyone in the area knows this - to get to OC from Baltimore, whether going Bay Bridge or Delaware, you have to drive through some small towns where the speed limit drops from 60-65mph freeway to 30-35mph w/ lights. In the freeway segments I would guess that I averaged 75mph. Only took 2-hrs, 15-min to get home.

Average for the entire trip: 18.4mpg

While driving home on Sunday I was averaging 19.4mpg which quickly dropped as I got off I95 and started to drop eveyone off at thier homes in the county.

I was even able to get into work this morning (13-miles).

Overall, I was quite impressed with the Hemi's MPGs on this trip.

Great Post!!

For anyone considering HEMI versus Pentastar this is a great thread.

Unless you are driving nearly all stop and go city driving and care about gas mileage go with the HEMI!

The Pentastar V6 would probably only have got ~2 mpg better on that trip.

Good report. I've run to Indy and back a few times and have seen 24.2mpg (EVIC) but typically I'm 20-23mpg for highway runs all on 89 octane. I wonder if you could have bumped that MPG up a notch or two by running 89? Good to hear you ran well on 87.

I just drove to and back from Las Vegas and southern California this weekend in my V6 4X4 Summit with one other person and some luggage in the back. I averaged exactly 21.7 miles for the roughly 550 round trip. I was very please. I seem to average around 17.5 miles during the week going to & from work (50% highway & 50% city).

Day 40 and 2240 miles here with my 2011 WK2 Overland Summit Edition, Pentastar V6, mineral gray, saddle/black interior...

I just finished my first road trip from PA to NH (836 miles roundtrip). I started the trip with roughly 1200 miles. The drive up to NH was on the Friday before Easter. It was rainy and cold the whole ride up. I drove normally with no abrupt throttle inputs and little passing averaging 70mph. I was able to get 19.1 MPG on the trip up (95% highway/ 5%city). On the trip back home on Monday (sunny and temp in the 80's), I drove very light-footed, coasted down the hills at 80 and climbed the hills at 65. I averaged 22.4 MPG. I'm hoping to get a little more once I have a few more thousand miles on it. All in all the drive was quiet and pleasurable. Love the Serius radio, travel link, and traffic update overlays on the GPS map. Other than the big gas tank that I had to fill 2 1/2 times at 80+ bucks a pop, I loved my GC on this road trip... A really nice drive, rain and all...

I'm 2/3 of my way through a road trip and I'm averaging about 10.9 MPG!

Of course I have a 5000 lb enclosed trailer in tow and am riding through the GA/NC/TN/KY mountains :) :) :)

Just to add to this, it was just my wife and I and about 200lbs of luggage/cargo...

I'm scheduled to drive a 400 mile (each way) trip over memorial day weekend so I'm looking forward to seeing good highway mileage, except when I go over the mountains in TN of course.

Good point. I am making a nearly identical trip in two weeks, same location, different golf courses, so I will fill up with 89 this time and see how it goes.

My intent was to show that the 13-19mpg on the Hemi's window sticker is actually obtainable and even passable. I thought it may be useful for those still debating. I wasn't trying to start a p*ssing contest of V6 vs V8 - everyone has there reasons and opinions; get what you like.

And at $4/gal that's only about a $9 difference for the trip.

Great thread, I'm taking a road trip in a few weeks and will run 89. Sounds like 89 will help the mpg's slightly, is that correct?

Does it really take 3 tanks or so for the computer to figure it out and get you better mileage? I will be driving the GC down to Alabama from Pittsburgh in a few weeks and currently have been running 87. The time or 2 I switched to 89 it made no difference. I thought I read on here after that that it takes a few tanks to realize the better MPG's.

I am hoping the switch to 89 and the summer gas now will up the mpg I have been getting, I am stuck on a 12 mpg average now with 87 octane.
