New Summit 134 miles huge grinding noise

My wife's black summit finally arrived this weekend. She loves it. A total of 134 miles are on it. I picked it up on Friday afternoon with 7 miles. Today she called me saying there was a loud grinding noise coming from the right rear wheel. So loud I could hear it on the Uconnect. I tell her to apply break pressure to see if it goes away. It continues getting louder and louder and then just stops. I think it could have been either a small rock or metal shaving caught in the break caliper. I drove it tonight when I got home and it is perfect. Thoughts? Should I take it to the dealer or just assume it is resolved? The 134 miles have been only on dry pavement.

Likely a small rock was hung up like your thinking. I would put another 134 miles on it and if all is good forget about it.

Thanks. I will post if any more issues.

Your theory sounds plausible. Any visible scarring of the rotor face?

I would wait and see if it comes back. I know there have been at least a couple cases I have read about with these where people got a grinding noise that would come and go from a heat shield rubbing on the driveshaft.

Was the park brake on?

Re: New Summit 134 miles huge grinding noise

I have a Durango and had the same thing in one of the wheels. I pulled the wheel and discovered a rock had gotten lodged between the edge of the brake drum and the backing plate so as the wheel rotated it just rubbed on the rock. For me it was easier to trace because it started right after I had been driving on some rocky roads and with the wheel off I could see it so easy removal. Just as you mentioned it's likely that it could have happened with the rotor and brake pad and it just dislodged itself. Hopefully that's all it was.

Thanks for your insights. No new noise today and no scaring on the roter.
