Tire pressure
Why do dealerships consistently over-inflate the tires way over the recommended pressure? Do they have the right equipment? I had my free oil change done at the dealership (and some TSB's applied) a few of weeks ago and apparently they checked my tire pressure as well. I went to check my tires yesterday using my trusty mechanical gauge and all four tires read 40 psi (38 cold). The sticker on the door clearly states 33 psi cold. I wouldn't mind if it was a couple of psi's over 33, but to 38? I'll have to air them down tomorrow morning to 33-34psi cold. I was wondering why the ride felt harder then before. I just remembered they also replaced my rear shock mounts (TSB) so now I have to get my torque wrench out and check if they over-tightened the lug nuts....I might as well check all four wheels .

Re: Tire pressure
I know they are overinflated for the transport from the factory in order to keep the vehicle from moving around too much on the tie downs, so I checked my tires as soon as I got it home and they were 40 psi cold. I had to lower them to 33-34 psi cold.

Re: Tire pressure
Interesting topic! My tires are @ 40 psi as well.

Re: Tire pressure
Usually the factory over inflate (also the spare), but dealers must check and put at right pressure before the delivery to customers.
Just few dealers check the pressure...

Re: Tire pressure
Mine are all 40/41 from Dealership... is 34 psi recommended for 20"?

Re: Tire pressure
Even though the door may say 33 I highly doubt 40 is above and beyond the max psi of the tire. Your just getting a slightly harder ride it's not a safety concern.

Re: Tire pressure
I just went and verified my door and it's 36 psi cold with a max inflation rating of 51psi this is for the 20inch rim and tire.

Do you have the offeoad package?

Re: Tire pressure
I don't know much (anything) about TPMS systems. Shouldn't 40psi result in a TPMS warning?

Re: Tire pressure
TPMS is a warning system for low tire pressure and high yes. But the thresholds are 25psi and 45 psi

Re: Tire pressure
Yeah the dealer overinflated the Wrangler SilentArmors I had them install. ~38PSI each. I lowered them down to 33PSI as per the door sticker once I got my Jeep home. I took her back a few weeks after for some TSBs and they overinflated the tires again! Argh!

Re: Tire pressure
I went and scoped mine out last Friday night, the night before I took delivery. There was a "reminder" sticker on at least one of the tires that mentioned deflating to spec. Next day I picked it up and all tires were at 40-41 PSI (vs. 36 per the door sticker). Looks like most dealers' prep guys are generally ignorant/careless/lazy or some combination of the 3.

.....and uneven/premature wear on the tires.
