Front wheel bearing/hub replacement

I plan to replace my front wheel bearing/hubs in the near future. In the past I have learned that some things are best procured from the dealer. Would the front wheel bearings/hubs be one of those items that is best to get from the dealer or are there aftermarket bearings/hubs that meet/exceed the OEM bearings? Anyone have specific brands they would recommend? Or brands the would recommend against using?

Thanks

I haven't had to do mine yet but I'm sure there are quality aftermarket replacement ones out there. Maybe try NAPA.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago and looks like I will be doing the driver side in the near future. If you are machanically incline it's not the bad. You may need to use a puller to remove the wheel bearing from the knuckle.

I am not worried about the mechanics of changing them out. I plan on replacing the bolts with new ones. I am interested in selecting the best/most durable wheel bearing/hub available for my Jeep. Anyone who has changed theirs, which bearings did you use? Timken? Jeep (dealer)? Federal Mogul?

Mine was "National Hub Bearing". They classified it as a premium bearing. Mind you I'm in Canada.

I usually feel better knowing that I have personally selected the highest grade bolts out there.

Can anyone recommend a brand of wheel bearing/hub?

Federal Mogul?
Timken?
Auto Extra?
Power Train Components?
Proshure?
Duralast?
Replacement?
Auto Trust?
FEQ?
MEVOTECH?
Crown?
Omix-ADA?
National Bearing/National Hub?
PBE?
Fenco/Fenwick?

Re: Front wheel bearing/hub replacement

I just went to Advanced Auto and picked up a bearing. It was National. I've only had it on for about 6 months (so no long term experience), but I haven't had a problem. For $75 and 1 hour of my time, I'll be happy if it lasts 3 years.

Replaced both front hubs with National brand from Advanced in '09, still going strong up to now! Had problems removing the old ones due to rust. Make sure you have puller and you might want to put anti-sieze on the new one.......

Re: Front wheel bearing/hub replacement

I bought my hubs from The Bearing Wearhouse on line. They cost $73.00 each plus shipping and handeling. They had several brands, but I choise to buy Timkin brand.

They are still in the box, but I plan on doing the job next week. I had the "whine" from the right front usually a result of the seal leaking. Like others, it's just a good idea to do both and be done with it. I do want to buy new holding bolts, but still not sure what to get. I may have to wait till I get into the job and find out the size, unless someone can address that here. I have read they are 13mm and are 12 point, but I think that is the head size. We need the thread and length information and perhaps hardness if that is indicated on the head with markings like we used to see on American bolts.

Good luck with your project and if anyone has the info regards to the three or should I say the six bolts needed to do both sides, we would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks

Re: Front wheel bearing/hub replacement

I just finished replacing the front hubs on my 04 Overland. The three holding bolts everyone talks about are hardened bolts, have small heads that take a 12 point 13mm socket and are 12mm X 1.75 X 80mm. The small head allows room to get a socket on the head, so if you are buying new bolts, keep that in mind. I purchased new bolts and also got a metric 12mm X 1.75 die which I used to clean up the threads so I could reuse the old bolts. That worked, so I will now take back the new bolts I didnít use.
The original holding bolts are about a ľ in too long which means that the ends can and do rust making them very hard to remove. Thatís the problem everyone talks about!
I used anti-seize compound on everything so it would be easier to get things apart next time. CV joints donít last forever either!
Also, I used the AutoZone purchase/return plan to facilitate a hub puller. However, their suggested puller did not fit a 5 in bolt pattern. We had to use the push bolt from one puller kit to work with another puller. So make sure you get what you need before getting started!
Hope that helps anyone thinking about wheel bearing hub replacement.

Sincerely
