Need advise on winter tires

Gents, does anyone live in northern areas to advise proper winter tires?

I'm looking for something to grind snow effectively, to look "angry" with RRO lift and to have studs. Speed rating less then 90mph (maybe even less).

Would like to see something like BFG TA/KO but with studs, but struggling to find any. Dozens of summer tires, but all of them are stud-less. Not good for me...

Studded winter tires are not legal in Ontario so I cannot speak from experience about them (except that they worked well for my Dad 40 years ago when they were still legal), but I recall seeing some positive forum comments about the Nokian Hakka line of winter tires last fall. That manufacturer has several types that can be fitted with studs.

Here's a page link:

As for non-studded tires I have opted for Michelin LTX A/T2s, but I know there are also many avid supporters for the LTX M/S, Blizzaks, Destination ATs, GoodYear Silent Armors, etc.

Hopefully others can comment on their experience. There's lots of choice.

I picked up a set of the Blizzak DM-V1. Studless, but nice large tread blocks and indeed this tire looks like it means business. Worked great in the gunk we had here.

Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor!!!!

Not only are they a kick a$$ A/T tire but they also have the snowflake logo which makes them legal for winter use. They were awesome during the big snow storms we(ontario/quebec) got hit with in February/March:thumbsup::thumbsup:

If you want a dedicated winter tire that functions well regardless of looks, the Blizzak DM-V1 and its predecessors generally win tire rack snow/ice traction contests, typically number 1 in the winter ratings. Other tires are better on dry pavement and mud, so I wouldn't call it an all around tire.

Yeah, it's really hard to choose.
Thanks to all for your recommendations.
I didn't think of legal aspects of this question. In my place all tires are legal. So I guess I'll have to ask locally, but honestly, I don't see anything better than Nokian Hakkapelita 7 SUV, although they don't look as meaty as I would want them to look.

But they would certainly make my climbing on steep icy roads a lot easier. However I really doubt that these are any good in deep snow.

I bought a set of General Arctic Altimax last year. Amazing. This was my first set of winter tires so I cannot comment on other brands. What I can say is IMHO... a dedicated set of winter tires is hands down the way to go.

I don't see these tires available in 18 inch, should I?

I ran them last winter on my Expedition 17". After I bought the Jeep I was going to order a set of 18" and you are correct. They are not available. The poster did not state what Jeep he owns. He may have factory 17" in that case these tires are unstoppable.

Re: Need advise on winter tires

When I had fleet cars employer would only pay for Blizzaks. In that employer had a division that insured cars and trucks there must be something to that. I did ask and they said the control on ice was the reason.

Wife has Hakkapalita 5's on her Volvo XC-70 in winter and could climb a wall!

Re: Need advise on winter tires

Anyone have any experience with the new Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac with snow and ice? Studded?

I've been using Blizzak's for the winter and snow on my last cars, but was wondering if a more aggressive tread pattern coupled with studs would be better for the jeep for icy and snow roads. We do get a lot of snow.

Do you feel that a studded Duratrac would compare to the Blizzak's or be better?

I'm currently happy with the 32s upsized tires on the wk2: 275 65 18. And would like to go for that size for the winter months. However, I'm still debating if wouldnt go for a 17 inch tire with moab wheels... ;-)

Thanks,
