This is very common among these jeeps, you are not alone at all! Lots of guys have this symptom, lot of times if what your feeling is like a shudder or jolting of sorts, its the torque converter locking and unlocking. Not sure at what rpm it is, but its been brought up before. Basically the converter is unlocking as rpms fall and your slowing and then you get back on it and then she locks again and creates this jolt/shudder a lot of times. The hill only accentuates the problem, but it isn't a cause. Just makes it seem worse, should occur on flat ground as well. Many have had it, not an issue, just something to deal with, not sure if there was ever a TSB that solved this.

Obviously there are a range of other things you could be experiencing, so fluid swaps are always good to do, also check for any codes, the computer will catch it all before us, thats why its there :) Other things you can do are have the tranny looked at by someone, they should be able to do a free diagnostics check. Really the only thing that would create that feeling are the TC or trans, nothing else would do that. Hope that helps

Re: Tranny

What do you mean by "slipped"? Did the Jeep roll backwards without being held in gear? If so, yes, it is your torque converter and some "slippage" is normal. I have a high stall unit and on cold mornings on a hill it'll roll backwards until I hit the brake, haha. However, on a stock unit, the torque converter engages at a lower rpm and unless you have a low idle, it will usually keep you from rolling back. Of course, it also depends on the steepness of the hill.

I think in 2013 we'll have DCT (dual clutch) assemblies from Fiat Powertrain Technologies, which will probably have a couple second delay before your Jeep would start to roll backwards while on a hill.

Re: Tranny

Yeah its your converter man, no worries, what you described is normal. As long as you don't notice any other issues under normal driving you should be ok. The service book has the fluid change intervals but like I said they are never a bad thing, only refreshes the lubricants in the system so you might as well do them just to do it unless of course they were recently changed :) Keep us posted if you notice anything "out of the ordinary"

When i got mine I had them service the trans and check it. I don't know if its just something they can look up or if they need to actually check it though.
