painting wj laredo plastic?
hey everyone,
im thinking about painting my laredo plastic side cladding, bumpers, door handles, and mirrors body color like how the limiteds are. im sick of the plastic fading and having to wax it every week and it still doesn't satisfy me. i removed the plastic rocker panel guards today and luckily there was no rust :D it looks much smoother too!
i plan to use duplicolor perfect match spray paint because they make it in my exact color, bright platinum metalic (ps4), but what would be the best way to prep the plastic so that the paint and primer will actually stick and last..?
i was thinking clean it real good, sand it smooth, apply lacquer thinner to clean all the debris then use a primer specially made for plastic, like krylon plastic or something, sand it again? and spray a couple coats of paint then clear it a couple times also.
how does that sound? anything else im missing or should do? please let me know of any suggestions to help me out! thanks

Re: painting wj laredo plastic?
i had mine done at a shop, cost 500 for sides and back (front was already done) but im not sure what they used, but it does chip off sorta easy so im thinking they didnt sand it smooth.. this is what i would do (not a paint pro by any means.. lol)

-mask or remove
-sand with some 500
-clean clean clean with some paint prep
-2 coats of primer for plastics with plenty of time to cure
-2 coats of paint
-3 coats of clear, wet sand inbetween..

Re: painting wj laredo plastic?
thanks!! i didnt do anything with them, i just left them there i guess, the paint shop did all the work, im sure they masked the body because you can tell on parts, some have a bit of clear overspray.

not the best pic but they painted everything, rockers and side skirts.. you might be able to get a better view if you look through the album theres more

Re: painting wj laredo plastic?
mine was actually "deep slate metallic" which looked damn near close enough to be black, and if i let the rims get a bit dusty it was a perfect match :)

Re: painting wj laredo plastic?
Removing the door moldings is a PITA...

They fit soo flush against the door it is nearly impossible to cut through the 3M tape at the bottom. The top have several clips which I have just left for the bodyshop to deal with, didn't want to risk stretching the plastic.

Would be easier leaving them on the car but not as easy to prep/paint so IDK it's up to you wheter you remove 'em or not.

There are trim products out there which are permanent too, I bought some Gtechniq - C4 Permanent Trim Restorer for the wiper cover and roof rail brackets. Stupidly expensive for a tiny bottle but will last 2 years. :)

Re: painting wj laredo plastic?
i plan to just leave the molding on my jeep so i dont damage it (i know i would lol) and just tape everything off really good. the bumpers i will be removing though. today i tried taking apart the door handles and they dont come apart unless i break them :( so im not sure exactly what im gonna do about that yet... havent messed with the mirrors to find out what i can do with those yet either lol

Do you have the service manual on removing/re-installing all the bits of the WJ?

If not I have it here, it's a PDF file but weighs 70Mb. I can upload it for you though if you want it. :)
