USAA, Carmax, 2012
How generally does USAA Car Buying Service compare to Thread Lightly 1% below invoice?
Generally USAA varies by region and is only for vehicles on dealer's lot. However, sometimes will order using USAA price.
Also talked to Norcross Carmax today. They will custom order a 2012 JGC when Order Book opens. They will honor 1% below invoice.

Re: USAA, Carmax, 2012
For our 2011 GC, I tried contacting Jeep dealers though the PenFed program which I think is the same program as USAA uses. They were offering about $1000 below invoice but the dealers who participated were not all that responsive or willing to help us find the Jeep we wanted. In the end I was able to get close to that price just though negotiating on an in-stock vehicle which I normally don't like to do...

Last purchase under the program was for my 2009 Volvo, and that went very well with that dealer.

I used USAA and my dealer got me a jeep from a lot ninety miles away. This is in northwest Oregon.

I used USAA to begin with and then had the USAA dealers competing. I was very blunt with them about them having competition. Ended up getting 2K below invoice on a dealer order from the factory.

That's a great deal.

I was going to use USAA but dealer was not in the system yet and would have had to go another 100 miles to get to one that was. I still had the family link though and got EP pricing for mine before I brought the trade in. Now the dealer is on the USAA program.

Re: USAA, Carmax, 2012
For my Summit order I compared USAA pricing to Tread Lightly pricing and the TL pricing won by 435 dollars. I went with that and also got another 1000 dollars off with "conquest bonus cash" for leasing a "competitive vehicle" which, in my case, was an Audi A6. This made my deal 1456 dollars below invoice with no haggling. I was happy even though it took over 3 months to get it.

We're retired military & used USAA for pricing a factory order. The dealer wasn't in the program but honored that price and applied a $500 military rebate as well. Good luck.

Re: USAA, Carmax, 2012
I used USAA pricing last month, and was actually able to negotiate with a local dealer to honor the USAA pricing from another region. Here in PA pricing was ~$1400 under invoice (Laredo X), but in the DC area it was $1700. I printed the pricing from the DC region and the local dealer honored it without question (and on the $500 military incentive was on top of that).

It's may also be worth noting that you can print a quote from the system without actually completing the entire process. My dealer told me USAA charges a dealer something like $400 for each referral that comes directly from them.
