OBX/Sand/etc... ???

My wife got some vacation time in late October. She wants to head down to the Outer Banks. How are the stock Latitudes in the sand? I have the 18" rims, would taking air out help? I rented a Jeep Wrangler 4-door last year when we went down and took it up to Carova and had a lot of fun, I am hoping to do the same with my new Jeep but don't want to get stuck 50ft in. :) The Wrangler we rented last year was horribly underpowered but it did fine on the beach. I am hoping the Hemi will make it a little easier this year but I don't have the tires that the Wrangler had either. :)

How is the weather down at the Outer Banks at the end of October? Can you use the beach at all? I have been going to the Outer Banks every year for the past 10 years but have been there in late May and early June for all of the trips.

In my experience driving in the sand down there, as long as you air the tires down, you shouldn't have a problem. Tried it without airing down once, sunk 20 ft in.. Don't know about that particular tire, but none of the tires i have had in the sand were aggressive at all..

Have you had your silver station wagon on the beach yet? If so, how does it do in the deep stuff? :)

You're not going to have any problems. Just keep the tire pressure lower like you always do.

I'm in Carova a few times a year. (8 miles up the beach) Last time was in January. The beach at that point, was great to drive on. (seemed not as soft as the Summer months) October should be fine. Much less people and if there's a big storm, there are some serious seashells to be collected.

I'll be in hatteras in just over a week. I'll be testing the jeeps ability to handle sand driving, obviously the 20's will be aired down to just under 20 psi to be safe. I'll report back with pics and my opinion of how the "rig" handled the dunes.

Tires will be fine, I actually find street tires better than very aggressive ones in the sand.
Agree 18 to 20 PSI for the 20". I was told by an "expert" that I could go down to 16, but the tire came off the rim at 18 PSI last time. But then again, I am I bit of a maniac.

I won't be going down to 16, I'll try to keep them right at 19-20 psi. And I won't be jumping dunes in the overland, just slow easy driving in the tracks already there. Pics to come soon!

I'll be hitting the dunes of OBX in one week. I plan on dropping the tires down to 19-20. I picked up a 12v air compressor from Harbor Freight for $10. I'll see how that does to re-fill the tires.

Not sure where your going sand driving but when we go at the oregon inlet there are free air pumps at te fishing center. Not sure about up in corova.
