Transmission Shifting Problem
A few days ago I experienced a weird issue with my 2011 Grand Cherokee. It's a Limited 4x2 with the 5.7 engine. I accelerated to pass a car and upon letting off the accelerator when I got around them, my Jeep downshifted really hard and then would not shift up out of second or third gear. Turned it off, then on again and it went away. A few miles down the road, the Jeep shifted up hard then down really hard. After this episode the check engine light came on, it would not shift higher than second gear and the manual shift function was disabled. I promptly drove it to the dealership where I purchased it to see what they thought. The Jeep has 4500 miles on the odometer and I have not had any issues with it before this. They took it in and gave me a loaner. Next day they called to say that they removed the transmission pan to check and see if there was any shavings or parts in the fluid. The fluid and filter were clean and they think that there might have been a issue with the filter o-ring not being seated causing the pickup to suck air. They wanted to keep it for another day so they can run some more tests as it is still shifting hard. Anyone have a clue as to what this might be??

Re: Transmission Shifting Problem
Perhaps the transmission detected a problem and went into limp mode (so you can get to a safe place to park without ruining the transmission). Problem could be any of a bunch of things, including low hydraulic pressure due to a leak..

Re: Transmission Shifting Problem
Well, the dealer called today and told me that after removing the transmission pan a second time they found excessive metal shavings. Said they wanted to replace the whole transmission and would be contacting Chrysler tomorrow (5-24) to request just that. The dealer has been excellent and completely on top of things so I guess I wait and see what happens.

Re: Transmission Shifting Problem
Wow. Sounds like you have a dealer with a very good service department. That was fast and a significant find and decision. Good luck!

Re: Transmission Shifting Problem
So, today the dealer called and informed me that Chrysler wanted them to tear down the transmission to determine what exactly went wrong. That is understandable, but Chrysler wants to repair the transmission pending on what they find in the tear down and the dealer would like to replace it. Since my Jeep only has 4500 miles on the odometer, I tend to agree with the dealer and would like it replaced. My experiences with re-built transmissions have not been good and I am concerned that it will come apart again. Any thoughts???

Re: Transmission Shifting Problem
This sounds to me like the dealer doesn't know whats wrong with it. If I understand this correctly the first time they pulled the pan they found nothing and the second time they find shavings. Sounds to me like they don't have any idea why the transmission is doing this and are hoping just replacing the whole thing will take care of it. I don't see how you can pull the pan once and find nothing and then pull it again and find shavings. This is probably why Chrysler wants further inspection.

Re: Transmission Shifting Problem
Dealer called yesterday (5-27) and said they were going to replace the torque converter and a few clutches. They seem to think that the filter came loose from it's seat causing the transmission to suck air. Makes sense to me, just wonder what caused the filter to work it's way loose off of the o-ring seat.........

Re: Transmission Shifting Problem
Dealer still has my Jeep. They have removed the transmission twice now...... First to check everything and replace the torque converter and a few clutches, then to replace an internal seal (they damaged while putting it back together) because it had no reverse and would not shift properly. Today (6-01-2011) they called and said that it was still not shifting properly and now they think that the valve body needs to be replaced. Chrysler will not let them replace the whole transmission as the dealer (and me) have requested. I am not really upset with the dealer, but I am not impressed with Chrysler at the moment. My Jeep only has 4500 miles on it and I should not be made to wait two weeks while they remove and install the tranny a dozen times chasing gremlins..... Lemon Law in Texas does not kick in until thirty days in the shop within the first 12K. I think the dealer gets two tries to address a safety related issue and four tries for other issues. I have been patient with the dealer but am reaching the end of my rope. Anyone have any ideas? Should I be screaming at Chrysler??

Re: Transmission Shifting Problem
After almost three weeks of trying to fix the transmission in my Jeep, the dealer has finally agreed to install a new one. Seems they installed the wrong parts in the old transmission trying to "fix" it. Isn't that something???!!

Re: Transmission Shifting Problem
damn. At least it's going to be fixed right tho. That doesn't give me too much trust in their mechanics. hopefully an isolated incident...

Uh....yeah. All we can do is hope. I'm tired of people raging on my WK about transmission issues. When will the bad transmission situation end with Chrysler.

There is a Transmission shop that actually deal with transmissions only and they say they see more Grand Cherokees than any other auto.
