Roof Bike Rack

Can anyone recommend a good bike rack to put on the roof. I have whatever rails came with the X-Package Laredo. Thanks for any info.

Sorry, I can't directly answer your question about a rooftop system. However, have you thought about getting a simple tow hitch and putting them on the back? Much easier on your back and possibly your car's finish (slip and hit your door with your bike's fork and that will leave a mark). I recently bought a 4 bike unit from Softride and love it. It was about $260, but then again I already had the factory tow hitch. Just a thought.

thule now has towers that fit the WK2 roof rails, and you can mount anything else from them or Yakima on them. this is perhaps best and cheapest method. can't recall but there was a recent thread on this topic, someone will chime in.

for sheer entertainment value, hard to beat this thread:

Re: Roof Bike Rack

I used a roof bike rack on my previous ride for fifteen years. Mileage on long trips was abysmal, and twice  I forgot the bikes were up there and drove into a low overhead, damaging them. Wind noise is annoying, and the rack obscures the view through the sunroof.

On my Jeep, I'm using a hitch-mount rack for bikes (Thule Ridgeline) and a roof rack for kayaks. I mount and dismount them as necessary.

To answer your question: Thule makes a custom fit kit for this car. Start with Thule 460R "rapid podium foot pack," Thule 4019 "fit kit," and Thule RB47 "rapid aero load bar pair" (or wider if you don't mind the bars extending over the roof edge.) That gets you two solid cross bars. Then put whatever you like on those bars. Consider adding a fairing to reduce wind noise. Note the restriction of 150 pounds max on the roof rack, per page 236 of the owner's manual.

Thule products are frequently offered on sale for 20% off. REI is having such a sale this week.

(My previous ride used all Yakima racks. This time around, Thule is a better fit for my needs.)

Re: Roof Bike Rack

Thanks for all the info. Yeah I would love to put one in the hitch, unfortunately I learned the hard way that a hitch is optional on a Jeep. I completely forgot about it before I ordered since the car came from another dealer. When I got home, like a dummy I was looking for the hitch. I know I can put one on, but she's a lease. I hear you on the height. I would probably do the same thing eventually. I'l have to check out those options everyone presented. thanks!
