Water in engine

I just drove through a puddle about 2 feet deep and my jeep died on me. I was watching little fusions and escorts go through so i was coasting through and it took a dump and just died halfway through. I tried to start it at first and it would only click one time. I let it sit for about 20 min and cranked it. It started but sounded terrible, like metal all grinding up so I killed it right away and now its sitting in a parking lot close by my house. What are some possibilities? Im expecting the worst and saying my motor is gone. Any opinions would be great.

Re: Water in engine

If a reasonable amount of water was ingested, it could have caused a hydraulic lock in one or more cylinders and it can break or bend a piston rod.

Did you check the air filter? Your air filter may have been wet and your engine was sucking down water but without seeing/hearing the engine it is hard to tell what you got going on.

I think it did cause a hydro lock because it did sound like metal was grinding/breaking when it did start. I took the air filter out and it was dripping water so i think a decent amount got into it and caused it to hydro lock

Sounds like your motor is toast. Had a buddy go through water and it died. He went to turn the key and it just clicked. He bent 3 rods and put a golf ball sized hole in the block.

The best thing to do is going to be to pull the spark plugs and rotate the engine by hand. See if you can see/hear anything bad. Most likely something on the bottom end is gone.

Same happened to me. Block was still good so i had a 392 stroker kit installed. Was it a puddle on your road? Call your insurance company

It clicked at first but I started it for a few seconds and heard like a crunching metal so I assumed the worst. Have to wait till tomorrow to do anything cause its still pouring rain and I have to tow the Jeep home. Thanks for the input.

The puddle was on the road right off my street. Im gonna call my insurance tomorrow and see if they are going to fix it. If they do ill just take it to my local Jeep dealer and have them replace everything with OEM parts since they will warranty all their work and they know about these Jeeps more than any mechanic I know of.

Do you have a cold air intake low to the ground? Seems odd the little cars weren't having problems. Good luck with it, insurance covered mine so hopefully you'll be covered.
