Dealer Rumor

I had a conversation with my local dealer and the dealer said there was strong rumor ('all but confirmed' were his exact words) of flash on the transmissions next year (2012) on the 2011's to get the 6th gear for the 5.7L. Can anyone confirm this is more than a rumor?

Check out the 2012 thread, Milous stated the 5.7 will get the 6-spd for 2012.

It's true. With the three planetary gear sets in the 545RFE, they can get more than the planned six ratios from that same transmission with nothing more than a flash; I surmise it now becomes the "645RFE" after the flash.

That then makes me wonder if the flash will apply to all 545RFE transmissions or just the vehicles with the 5.7L.

I am sure if Jeep do not do it a tuner will

"I don't believe that it's simply going to be a matter of reprogramming. In fact, if I had to bet (and I could be wrong) I would say that it won't even be possible. I haven't seen the specs yet, but it is a different 6-sp trans than is going into the 2012 Ram (which IS getting a reprogrammed 5->6sp transmission). There may (or may not) be internal changes to the transmission. If not, the electronics will more than likely be deeply integrated into the vehicle computer and bus systems."

From Milous, Look's like it will be a different trans.

So no 6 Speed for the 2011 owners? :(

A transmission is still a mechanical device.
No point in a software update that gives an extra gear somewhere between the others.
They would need a ratio change in the transmission to make a even range between gears.

That's true to a point. Perhaps they will change one of the planetary gear sets internally to enhance the ratios. For the Hemi, too many rations (i.e. a 7spd or 8spd) would be too many shifts and wear & tear for a nil performance benefit.

In an automatic transmission like the 545RFE with three planetary gear sets there can be more ratios "created" by programming which clutches are engaged/disengaged. The current 545RFE was originally a 4spd (45RFE) and became a 5spd via flash upgrade. People with the 45RFE 4spd were able to get a flash to then have a 5spd. Our 545RFE is already technically 6spd in that there are two different 2nd gear ratios: one for acceleration from a stop and one for kick-down passing acceleration while moving.

With the 65RFE that is coming out in 2012 at least two different (non-Chrysler) drivetrain engineers I know have stated they heard it is the same 545RFE but modified. To what degree they will only know when their respective companies buy one and tear it down in the ever-continuing study of the competition.

Heard from a dealer today (who supposedly chatted with their dealer rep) and they claimed that the 2012 6-spd will be a late availability ... likely not 'til mid 2012 when they start being available. Sounds like a likely story from a dealer. Can anyone confirm this?

The information I have clearly shows the 6-speed being available at launch.

I'm still leaning towards saying "no". Seems to me that if all it took was nothing more than a reprogramming of the software, why wouldn't they have implemented the change many years ago?
