Cam Install Day 2

Damn the juice! I had a Rockstar energy drink yesterday morning and 10 minutes later decided I was going to do my cam swap myself and yesterday was the day to do it. I opted to pull the heads as i wanted to get to really tighten down the bolts on the exhaust manifolds and replace the head gaskets with some Cometic gaskets.

Currently both heads are off and the crank bolt is loose. I rented a compressor from Home Depot and bought a $25 impact gun from wally world for the crank pulley. The pulley puller I rented from Autozone seems to be leaving my bolt hanging about an inch short. I'll figure something out after some sleep.

I think every thread i've read on hemi cam swaps all say it's quite the ordeal, and I completely agree. I have not yet seen a cam swap DIY write up on a Jeep though, SRT8 or not. I can tell you that the write ups i've read on LX's and Rams seem a bit easier. Our wk's have got a lot of crap running into the radiator fan, radiator, etc... I got the radiator out, but the fan and ac condenser are still in. Hopefully they wont be in the way when the time comes to pull the cam.

One thing i kept worrying about after my engine was built was i felt the pushrods were too short. After reading up on people doing the 6.1L cam swap i found you have to use the 6.1L pushrods as it's cam has a smaller diameter and i just felt the shop didnt do that. Well when i compared the rods i pulled from the motor to the stock 6.1 rods i got from Interia they were about 1/8" shorter! So i can only imagine that means one of my valves was not opening as far as it should have been. So i am looking forward to some more power from the new cam as well as from having the correct pushrods.

Here's some progress pics:

The stock head gaskets would've been fine. I'm running stock gaskets on my 426 without any problems.
Good luck with the rest of the build! Post up if you run into any issues.
Pay close attention when you set the timing, a half tooth off in either direction and you're taking the front of the engine apart again.

I got a great deal on the cometics, so i figured why not. I would imagine the truck would have ran like crap if it was already off a tooth, but it sure looks as though it was. When the key slot on the crankshaft was dead center on the chrysler emblem, the arrow on the cam gear was slightly to the right versus straight up. Also since i had the heads off i could see when cyl 1 maxed out and began going back down. So i set the cam gear at vertical right when cyl 1 was coming back down. I sure hope its right, i saw a video of a guy on the lx forums that was off one tooth.

So now i have the heads on and am about to torque them down. I've found the tq settings but not the sequence. Can anyone help out with the head bolt order i go in? Center outward right?

I have more pics, i'll post once im done

Well i am 99% complete. As the sun started to set i was more and more in a hurry to get her started, probably too much so. I get her started and the idle is all over the place. It's running alight but it just wouldnt hold an idle.

So i was pretty distraught considering I blew my entire weekend on this and it doesnt work! Then after a shower and some food i remembered in my rush to start her up i left the 2 bolts at the EGR sensor off. I have it turned off with my tune so i thought it wouldnt matter. But i didnt even think about how that being undone is like having a 5/8" hole on my intake manifold. Im sure hoping that's the cause of my issue. It's late and i dont want to mess anything up from rushing, so i'll just give it another shot tomorrow after work.

I think I remember you. You use to have stock wheels with BFGs right? And you have a custom exhaust? And you had pictures of a bunch of exotic cars on photobucket?

I have custom exhaust and used to have a CTS-V. The shop i took it to worked mainly on vette but there was an occasional lambo or two. My V looks like a 4x4 sitting next to the Gallardo!

I've had stock SRT8 exhaust, stock SRT8 with a magnaflow welded in, then i went to something completely different with the custom setup with the intent to bring it out of the side one of these days. Oh and yes i did have stock wheels with BFG MT and some 1.5" wheel spacers

Re: Cam Install Day 2

So i couldnt wait and drove up to Home depot to get a new 8mm socket right at 6am this moring. I put the egr tube in and she starts up and idles fine! Sounded great! So i take her around the apt complex to a less populated area to let it idle. Everything is fine for about 4minutes and then the idle blipped up and then it died. So i started again to drive it back to my garage and each time i'd take my foot off the gas and slow down it would die. It had just started to warm up, so it seems it was right as it went into closed loop it started acting a bit goofy. Could this be due the tune, maybe a loose vacuum line?

Also i noticed a bit of smoke coming out of the drivers side exhaust but only at idle which i assumed was just all the PB blaster i had to use when putting the exhaust back on.

You use to have KM1s on the stock chrome wheels. You can't see it in the pictures but you have a sunroof right?
