Paint Issues

Hey Gang. My first post here. First a big thanks for all the helpful tips I've come across while chasing threads.

Is anyone experiencing problems with paint cracking? The Bright Silver metallic paint on my GC Laredo X is beginning to crack on the front bumper (cover) near the passenger side fog light. Dealer just got approval from Chrysler to repaint. Appointment set for 6/20. I'm a little hesitant about having my 7 month old vehicle painted by a local body shop. Had problems with Ford paint about 20 years ago. They (the actual dealer - not a 3rd party) painted the bumper (cover) 3 times and the paint never stuck.

Also, I can't get my iPod Mini to play thru the USB port in the armrest. Dealer claimed it was a "compatibility issue". I have the latest iTunes version installed and the owner's manual states the system is compatible with the mini. Any ideas?

Thanks for your input.

Welcome! :wavey:

No issue with cracking/flaking paint on my Laredo. I did however claybar my whole Jeep after I picked her up and used a sealer + wax so the paint is well protected.

I would suggest doing the same once you get that paint issue solved in order to prevent future issues.

You might also want to look at a clear bra for the front.

I also did the clay bar and sealer wax, Take care of your paint and it will take care of you.

No paint issues for mine.

As for the USB port in the armrest, I presume you have checked the cable (say by using it to connect to your computer). Next, have you tried using a different iPod to see if there is any better luck getting that recognized by the radio unit? I use a iPod nano 5th Gen with no problems.

BUT my centre armrest connector went dead after about 10 weeks of ownership, and had to get the dealer to repair it (they said a loose connection at the radio).

Thanks for the replies. I'm a big believer (and user) of the clay bar and regular "bathing" of the vehicle. Up here in the north east I fight the pollen in the spring/summer and road salt in the winter so I am washing the Jeep every couple of days. In the winter, I am usually outside washing the Jeep if it is above 32 degrees. (OCD anyone?!) The splintering of the paint leads me to believe there is not enough flex agent in the paint. Guess I will see what happens after the repaint.

Regarding the USB in the arm rest - when the Mini did not work I tried an iPod touch. The system began "reading" and then displayed the message "An Error Occurred". I tried an iPhone last night and it seemed to work. Thanks for the advice.

Have a good week everybody and thanks again.

Have both issues taken care of by the dealer and do not accept the Jeep back until you are fully satisfied! Good luck :)

The iPod issue is a problem for pretty much all of us. There's nothing the dealer can do about it until Chrysler releases a software fix.

Thanks Rage. If only it were that easy. For some reason my expectations seem to always exceed the dealers' abilities.

I won't bore you with details but the Jeep has already been out of service 9 days, I had to provide the necessary TSBs that the dealer could not find in their data base and the tech left a vent hose disconnected after replacing the gas tank which eventually set off the loose gas cap light on the dash (an annoying little bugger). I found the hose and made the repair myself. Now I need to have the Jeep painted. I'm starting to think "Murphy" was an optimist.

Andrew - Thanks for the info on the iPod. My dealer seems to be clueless about the software fix that Chrysler needs to release to fix this issue.
