Occasional hard-start condition
Hi All,

I was hoping for a little help with a problem that has recently surfaced with my 2005 5.7L (135,000 miles).

About every 10 driving cycles or so, it takes longer to start - about 3s of cranking vs. starting straight away. Once running, there are no hesitations, stalling, erratic idling, etc. Engine is turning over, so starter is engaging properly. If I stop cranking after, say 1s, and then turn it over again, it will fire straight up.

It is not affected by temperature, that is, it may do it after sitting over night or after being shut-off for five minutes...of course, it hasn't once done this to the wife, which make things even worse as she insists I am simply not "starting it properly"!. Happens with either key.

I have changed the starter (that was a pain to get at!), plugs, PCV and EGR. The wires looked ok when I changed the plugs so didn't bother with them...all other regular maintenance is up to date.

Any ideas? Do the wires? Time to start looking at the fuel system?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Re: Occasional hard-start condition
A delayed start but otherwise decently healthy start I generally lean towards fuel system. Furthermore there is a star case reguarding a bushing failing and allowing debris to keep the fuel return check valve open. in the fuel pump causing a sometimes intermittant fuel pressure bleed down. If you T'd into your fuel line with a pressure gauge and checked it before you started it every time till it happened again you could see if it either bled off all the pressure or was slow to rebuild pressure.

Re: Occasional hard-start condition
Thanks for the response.

It looks like it was a failed/failing fuel relay, as I have not had any problems since swapping it out.

I do appreciate the advice, and if the problem comes back I'll definitely do as you suggest.
