Hemi V8 - trouble downshifting around 40 mph
 
My 2011 Laredo with a Hemi V8 is having trouble downshifting around 40 mph. Most of the time it acts hesitant to downshift and feels like it might stall, and sometimes it shifts really hard with a clunking sound. This usually occurs when I am slowing down after exiting a freeway or otherwise slowing down from a speed above 40 mph.

Of course, when I took it to the dealer and we went on a test drive, it did not act up. The tech said my complaints sounded similar to the issues resolved by a TSB for the V6, but that there is no TSB for the V8. He said the only option is to take the transmission apart to see what's going on.

Any ideas? I'm planning to drop it off at the dealer and tell them they can drive it around and keep it until they fix it. My 2006 JGC was into the dealer 7 times for transmission issues, so of course now I'm questioning my decision to stick with the JGC.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

All of my cars seem to have a speed that it doesn't like. My Ford Fusion 4-banger doesn't like 30mph. The tranny seems confused at that speed and has trouble finding the right gear. My v8 Jeep has the same 40 mph issues yours has. My old 2005 Crown Vic used to downshift hard into first at around 20 (if I remember correctly). I got used to the 40 mph issue with the Jeep. When I need it to shift and I am around that speed, I either spike the gas pedal or manually shift to the gear I want.

My 11 Fusion V/6 is still funky at 40 as well after it was "updated" per Ford's TSB. The GC is doing well.
