Transmission problem
So after almost 150.000 Km of almost trouble free Jeeping, my tranny started to act up on the freeway. Suddenly downshifted with engine rpm somewhere between 5000-6000. Check engine lt came on. Pulled the code and was only showing the P0700, only telling me that the TCM detected some kind of failure, which has to be pulled with a DRB III scanner. In D the tranny shifted normally from 1 to 2, but when it had to go to 3, the connection between tranny and engine seems to be lost and the engine will rev without any speed change. After this it doesnīt go back to 1 or 2 anymore, but stays "disconnected. Putting the tranny in 2 works ok. Looks to me as a valve body solenoid or wiring problem. Tomorrow i will take the Jeep to a garage to pull the TCM codes, hopefully nothing too serious is going on.
Anybody already had the same sypthoms (or at least, his Jeep:D).
Update: had just used my OBD II scanner and it gave P0733, "GEAR 3 INCORRECT RATIO". Since third gear is gone, this code is not such a surprise. Is there any way to measure the 3rd gear solenoid without removing the pan?

Frank here's the pinouts for the solenoid assy but from what I gather each ratio is controlled by more than one solenoid.The plug is on the driverside front of the tranny above the pan flange. Good luck bud.

Thanks Dave. I didnīt see that connector pin-outs, very handy to have. Looking at the clutch application chart clutch UD and OD should be applied. The UD is also used in first and second, so should be ok.
I will start to measure from the TCM, because measuring directly on the transmission solenoid/TRS assy will be impossible when installed. But most probably i will end up removing the TRS assy...................:(

New update: measuring the solenoids didnīt show any failures, at least the resistance of all are in the same range. Just drained all fluid and iīm not sure if its burned or not. The colour is still redish/brown (little more red then brown), but it has a smell i donīt remember from the previous time. Looking with a bright flashlight into the pan, i can see very small glinsters in the fluid and a little very fine metal buildup on the magnet. The magnet at least looks the same as before, i only didnīt look with a flashlight in the pan the last time. The fluid was already due for a change (did almost 70.000 km on it), but i wonder what can be causing the loss of 3rd gear? Is there any good reason to open up the valve body, or is my problem most likely mechanical and should i look for a tranny specialist?

About the only thing that you could check yourself is to look at the springs and piston seals under the accumulator plate to see if you have a broken spring or bad accumulator piston seal. Just don't get the springs mixed up cause they are bore specific.That's about as far as my tranny knowledge goes and I only know that much because of the shift kit install! Good luck bud.

dont know how you got on with this problem,but code 0700 can be an input or output speed sensor which are both the same. so only buy one and try in both positions. other option is the small gasket/seal that goes on before your pan filter. be sure it is completely in its hole. it needs to be gently tapped in with the back side of a socket to get it to seat correctly.
this lets it suck air instead of fluid.
last posibility i can think of is the plate that holds the valves in the valve body. these sometimes work the screws loose or strip them out allowing the plate to flex.

Just received my car back an hour ago. He was suppost to be ready last week, but during the final testdrive they found a small leak from the tranny front side, which finally was coming from the torque converter. (torque converter was opened for cleaning and check and welded together again).
The OD clutch was completely worn and slipping. This was probably caused by a small leak from the valve body seal plate. At least there was a small breakage in the seal, which probably lowered the pressure to the clutch pack and caused it to slip. The fluid was burned. I will show some pictures lateron.

At least you got it fixed. Sucks that it went out before 100k miles b/c that's not much for a tranny.

Did they charge you an arm and a leg like they do here for any tranny work?

After some jeeping with the rebuild tranny, i can say that it was a job well done. It changes gears so smooth, i don't remember it had done like this before. Also previously when putting it into gear, (rev or D), a rattling sound was audible and now........... silence:thumbsup:
They only didn't use ATF+4, but instead ELF Dexron III synthetic. They used it also in other 5-45RFE trannys before with good results. They are the specialists (i hope).........:rolleyes:. Trying to get some pictures from the worn/broken parts for the picture lovers, but the mechanic forgot to put the parts in the trunck. He will send them to me tomorrow.:cool:

Here follow some pics:
The first picture shows the complete master kit which was changed.
Picture 2 shows the probable cause of all problems, the valve body seal plate with the damaged seal beat.
Picture 3 shows the OD clutch components with the worn friction material on one of the plates.

I leave in New Caledonia and I have a GC overland 2004 WJ with 45rfe tranny
It is a V8 4.7L
