430N - USB ports not created equal?

Am I missing something ....?

The USB plug in the armrest does not carry the same functionality as the plug on the 430N itself? Plugging a USB drive into the armrest will not allow transfer to HDD, etc. It almost seems like the plug in the armrest was designed for an ipod only.

Is this correct?

Yep. That's how they work.

The USB on the radio is tied in directly to the radio's main circuitry, just like a USB on your computer. The USB in the armrest is part of the UConnect system which is separate from the radio all together in the 430N.

I use thumb drives full of MP3s. I can play my music in either port.

I can play music as well form the arm rest port. But only play. Cannot upload to HDD, tracks show track name only (not artist, album, etc).

Right, you can only upload to HDD from the faceplate port. But my MP3 tracks show artist, album, etc. when played from the armrest port - it just displays the metadata within each file. However, it won't show album covers.

Interesting gotcha - if the "genre" tag is set to "podcast," the 430N treats the file differently and won't show artist/album etc. Now I change the tag in podcast downloads to "nonfiction."

I notice that there is a 'playlist' option when using a usb stick from the armrest. I don't know of a way to create a playlist on a stick. I don't believe you can do it through the car's system.

Yeah - basically my same point from above. When plugged into the arm rest USB, the 430 thinks your memory drive is an ipod, and creates the playlist/album/whatever categories.

I haven't tried it, but my guess is that creating a .PLS or .M3U file on your computer would do the trick.
