Power Steering dying?

<sigh> I think my PS is dying. The Jeep has a little over 80k miles and its the PS is already crapping out? Its getting the moaning noise like a Ford Explorer and hard to move the steering wheel when parking turning.

Whats wierd is that in the morning when I first fire up the Jeep it shows no problems.

I checked the fluid in the resevoir when hot and cold and it shows adequate amount.

What does a pump cost ballpark?

Is it difficult to replace?

Will a mechanic rape me on it?

Ive never dealt with PS or PS fluid. I do however, have mild mech experience though. The most mechanically complicated thing ive ever done on a vehicle is change shocks and springs.

Yep, just had the same problem with mine two weeks ago with only 65k miles. Changing the pump is super easy. It's only two lines and three bolts. Shouldn't even take an hour to switch it out. Also, on my 2006 Hemi it has a sticker on the p/s reservoir calling for special hydraulic fluid. The only place I could find it was at the dealership. Good luck!

What did the parts and fluid run you?

Well.....I get parts at cost through my work but the pump was around $70 from Carquest. The fluid was $10 for 1 quart which I barely used a 1/4 of a quart. I think list prices were $120 for the pump and $15 for the fluid.

I got my pump from Just for Jeeps, was $59 from memory.

Mine just up and crapped out on my out in the bush after midnight, buyt yes, very simple change.

In fact, they're so cheap, I purchaed TWO pumps, just in case it goes again! lol
