Burning Tunes to HDD - 17 minutes 1 CD (?)

I attempted to burn a CD to the HDD the other day. Nothing fancy, just 80 minutes, 24 songs in .wav format. It took 17 minutes to burn the CD to the hard drive. Seems a little excessive. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions on how to speed up the process?

I haven't tried loading from a CD, but from a thumb drive I've found you can transfer fairly large files in about that time frame. I'd probably be transferring MP3s over, not WAVs; while the WAV is higher quality, the reduced file size for a good quality MP3 rip is a good tradeoff. Even the decent audio system in these WK2s won't really show the difference between a 256kbps MP3 and a full uncompressed WAV.

The day I got my Jeep I way burning CD's to the drive and one was taking forever and forever. Basically stopped burning and froze up after awhile. Wouldn't eject or anything. I had to disconnect the battery to even get the damn thing out. I was freaking out thinking my Nav unit was shot, but it's been fine since and I've put a lot more music on it after that day.

Yes, that's how long it takes. It's not a very fast system. If you can live without cover art, it's a lot faster to "rip" ("burn" means write a CD) your music to files on a PC, copy them to a USB thumb drive, and load that into your head unit.

And, as noted above, you gain nothing from these unambitious speakers by creating .WAV files instead of .MP3.

Thanks for the advice. I had previously tried to load songs from a thumb drive but the USB port on the face of the unit did not acknowledge the thumb drive. Not sure what's going on. I will try to again this weekend.

I've been using mp3 128K or 160K format with no issues. Plus, they load pretty quick from the usb compared to other formats that are accepted by the head unit.

I copied a bunch of music files from my iTunes folder on my PC to my 430 unit via a USB thumb drive. Wasn't speedy but it didn't take 17 minutes...

Could be related to the size of the drive. I'd try a 1 or 2 GB thumb drive, not a huge 16GB one.

That seems reasonable for such a long CD. Standard size CD's take 7 or 8 minutes at the most.

I use huge thumb drives with no trouble. My guess is that the drive that didn't work was not formatted FAT32.

That's probably it.

Can you fill me in on the FAT32 format for the thumb drive?
