Anybody tow a camper with your WJ?

I've gotten to the point where I'm going to get out of the motorhome scene.Way too much expense and upkeep for the 2k miles a year we put on one.Looking into trading in the "Money Funnel" after this vacation on a Jayco 26' bunkhouse. The Jeep has the full tow package and we've hauled our boat(3500#)around for the last 3 years with it with no problem. The camper is gonna weigh 4570# dry and when we get all our crap in there I figure probably 5500#.What do you guys think?

No problem. I'm hauling a 5k lb boat and the JGC doesn't sweat.

Sounds like a heck of a camper, what is it along with toys to clear that weight?

I don't think you'll have any issue at all. I would think you may want to have trailer brakes considering the curb weight according to wjjeeps.com is around 4300 pounds. Also I like the shaved antenna:thumbsup:

Actually Moose that's one of the lighter ones(no slides) as I'm trying not to abuse the little WJ too much but I never bought any of my Jeeps to sit there and look purty either:D:D.

Thanks Medic! I got tired of it coming loose at the car wash so when a shovel fell on it in the garage I had them weld the hole in before paint. Put an amplified one under the tweeter cowling but it doesn't work that great(still working on that). Anyway gonna def have to go electric brakes and weight dist hitch. I think the tow rating on a v8 wj is 6500# isn't it?

Yup! Not sure if you've seen this website but I thought it could be somewhat helpful.

The "Money Funnel" all cleaned up and ready for the beach trip on Sat.Even got my bud to clean up after me while I took the pic. She's up for sale after we get back. She gets a whopping 7-8 mpg and it only cost $240 to fill it up:lol::mad:.

I towed a pop up camper a couple of times with my 99. In the heat of the summer I was glad I had the factory tow package. The factory trans cooler proved it's worth when the temp gauge went to 240 and the trans overtemp light flickerd on some uphill grades. I did notice some twitchy handling due to the short wheel base and limited track width of the WJ.

Been there, done all that. Pick ups, slide ins, trailer campers, mini motor home, motor home and finally 30 ft boat we left in the water. it all comes down to "compromise". The Jeep like you have is a good compromise for everyday use, winter seasons, pulling something or just going out for the evening. Trailer brakes, surge or electric would be a wise investment. You can try your best to stay out of trouble on the road, but you never know when someone else will slip in front of you and challenging your ability to stop. Many people just don't want to follow someone pulling a trailer or driving a camper, so they do whatever it takes to get in front of you.
