NV242 service
Was looking so do a fluid change in my Selec-Trac 242 TC pretty soon. Looks like a 10mm allen/Hex socket for the plugs. Is this the correct size, ive heard mixed responses out there..I think im getting confused by some of the ZJ guys. (they say 30mm)
-So is it a 10mm hex, also is the Valvoline atf+4 sufficient? On sale at NAPA and i love valvoline products.
- Also, I know to remove the fill plug first to ensure it'll get filled back up after drain.

Sounds like you have everything right!:thumbsup: I forget what year but Jeep switched the transfer case plugs, they used to be a big 30mm bolt, but late 90's i think they changed to a 10mm hex/allen plug. Valvoline is also my favorite brand for auto fluids and atf+4 is excatly what your NV242 (selec-trac) needs.

Besides pulling the drain plug first, the only other tip I have is to pick up a fluid pump or an adapter with a flexible tube to use to fill it back up, the hole is too small and there isn't enough room to pour directly from the bottle.

PS I am part of that crowd that learned the hard way to pull the fill plug first, very embarassing to have an empty tcase with a rounded out fill plug....:confused:

yeah i figured it would be good practice to grab one of those pumps Ive seen at NAPA. Looks like 2 qts should do it. Fill to overflow like a diff is my understanding. Confirm oil capacity on NV242??? Also ive seen the Teflon tape put on the plugs, but think im going to avoid that. Dont want that crap in my TC. Have you ever tried the Teflon tape as a preventative leak method?

I did not use teflon tape and have not had a leak, just my experience. Capacity info copied from

Oil Fill Capacity: 2.85 pts. (LD); 6.5 pts. (HD) (ATF+4). Two versions of the NV242 are used in the WJ vehicles, NV242LD and NV242HD. The two transfer cases can be distinguished from one another by the rear output shaft retainer. The NV242LD uses a rubber boot to cover the rear output shaft, while the NV242HD uses a cast aluminum housing.

So, for the standard model its about 1.5 qts and 3.25 for the HD model. I guess the only way to know is by looking at the output shaft. And yes, just like a diff, fill to the bottom of the fill plug hole.

If it's behind a 4.0 it's the 242LD unless somebody did a transplant.
