Any of you WK2 owners have/had Wranglers?

I just got back from OBX again and my wife saw a really nice looking Jeep Wrangler. Now she wants her own Jeep . It had a moderate lift on it and 33-35" tires. I thinking I would like to find one that was basically stock and add my own parts to so I know it wasn't beat. I would like to keep the initial purchase around $7k. What years should I consider and/or exclude. Coil vs leaf suspension? Is the 4.0 the motor I want? I've seen a bunch of 4.0's with mileage in the 125k-140k, is that a lot for the motor or are the good for a lot more? I don't want to buy a 125k motor to find out that I need to rebuild it. Any insight regarding this would be great.

Mods: I know this may be in the wrong forum, but since I usually post here and trust these guys advise thats why I posted here.

Thanks,
Jim

I have a 07 but it/I am a mall/beach crawler. I can't comment on the 4.0 but I have the 3.7 with 85K on it. There has been lots of probs with the 3.7/transmission. I would check out jk-forum.com for advice.

I had a 98 TJ Sahara, I had a 6 inch lift on it with 36x14.50 super swamper tsl radials on it. It was the 4.0 with the dana 35 rear end. It was a tough jeep the only thing I needed to change out with the Dana 35. I blew the rear end gears out of that thing 3 times. A ford 9 inch would have been nice or a dana 44 but 44's weren't available from the factory back then.

You can get a late 90's TJ for 6-7k with less than 70k miles on them. (i know becuase I have been looking) I loved that jeep and it was so easy to work on, I did all the work myself and I was only 16 years old at the time, very simple.

I miss that thing, one day I will build another.

Good luck!

What beach were you on when you saw the wrangler?

I had a 97 se. Only changes were to a slightly larger tire and added diamond plating to the area just above the step on both sides.

I had a '07 4 door Rubicon up till now. I miss it. Totally different beast than the GC.

I sold my 2000 Wrangler Sport 4.0L - 89k miles for 7k. The interior exterior was mint but had a leaking rear main seal. The 4.0L is a pretty solid engine, I wouldn't be scared of 120k but I would check the rear main seal and the front and rear end. I had the rear end rebuilt at least 4 times and even the rear drive shaft replaced. This Jeep had never seen offroad.

I owned three XJs with the 4.0L engine, all as daily drivers. Two of them I owned for about 9-10 years each and ran up to 190k miles on them both. The engines never needed anything but oil and filter changes and spark plugs. Never burned oil between changes either, done at about 5,000 mile intervals.

If the 4L engine is maintained properly it is great.
