Problem in 4th and 5th Gear

Hello all,

this might relate the the stutter or shudder problem many refer to, but the symptoms are fairly different:
Jeep is a 5.7 4x4 Limited, build Feb 2011 (sold to me in June 11, with 37 miles on the clock)

Since new, once the torque converter has locked up in 4th or 5th gear, whilst accelerating the car stutters all the way as if the engine was missing a beat. This happens by accelerating at about 20% throttle, ie just before the point the car would unlock the torque converter and shift down a gear.
The stutters persists at all speeds, accelerating from 45 mph all the way to 90mph (did not try any faster).
Even accelerating from 80 upwards produces the same result.
This happenes in all modes: in Sport as in Auto, In D as in Autostick mode. Same situation in Tow/Haul: as soon as the torque coverter locks up in 4th or 5th, the stutter begins.
I have brought it to the dealer and the driveline tehcnician took a ride with me, recognised the problem and agreed this is not simply an MDS effect, but a real issue.

They kept the car for a day, telling me they did not know how to fix it, and raised it to Chrysler via a Starcase. Chrysler admitted they know about the problem and are working on a fix. It has been 2 weeks and they had no news (obviously it is me needing to chase them..!)

Now, this sounds different from the issues experienced in other threads I have read here (some refer to a shudder whilst the case changed gear at full throttle, some referred to a stutter at partial throttle that disappeared post 65mph), so I am doubtful Chysler is really working on a fix.

The issue does bother us as we use the car mainly for long commuting trips, and with the cruise control on the Freeway it feels like driving over a washboard.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Daniele

Try 5 in auto shift. It eliminates mds, but not torque converter lockup.

I did. It still does it. It does it in all conditions.
Thanks.

Get the latest TSB for the 5.7 applied and see what that does. I know exactly what you are feeling and I'm hoping the TSB helps though it's more an annoyance that a huge issue for me. I think the issue is with the transfer case as it feels like driveline lash.

Re: Problem in 4th and 5th Gear

Thank you very much for your suggestion, I have convinced my dealer to install TSB 18-035-11.
It did improve dramatically the smoothness of the gear changes, I did not realise how clunky they were until this TSB had been installed. Wow.

However, the original problem in 4th and 5th gear is still present, in exactly the same way and just as severe. The dealershio does not know what to do and refuses to start exchanging mechanical parts.

Any ideas?

many thanks,

Daniele

I'd tell them to fix it, replace it with a working one or give you the money back it takes to fix it as they obviously are not able or willing to.

I have the same problem 5.7 also. Took it to the dealer who are not currently acknowledging there is a problem.

I have the same shudder problem with my 2012 Quadra-lift Hemi. Important note: this is my 2nd 2012 Quadra-Lift Hemi - my 1st 2012 QL Hemi did not do this. I exchanged that ride for an alignment reason which Chrysler was awesome. I know a lot of 2011 owners are wondering if the 2012's exhibit this problem - yes they do, at least the one I got! I tried all suspension/drive modes and the shudder is still there. I did find that sport mode lessens the sensation dramatically since the tranny will downshift much quicker and thus unlock the torque converter with significantly less gas pedal depression. I just drive in sport mode all the time now - it's more fun too! But, as you can see, I'm still looking for a solution.

You don't think it's related to this TSB?

I did look at that TSB, but a 2012 should of had that 2011 TSB included with the factory delivery in 2012. I will inquire next time in. Thanks for your reply.
