Labor Day Water pump Nightmare

What's going on everyone.. Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend and spent money on better things other than a new belt, water pump, and thermostat..

Okay, so i'm doing a friend a favor by moving a treadmill from her car to an upstairs bedroom.. She's 4 months pregnant and really cant/shouldnt do it herself...

So here comes Mr.nice guy at 9pm on a sunday night driving to her house and i go from normal driving, to a james bond smoke screen, and that horrible stench of boiling/burning antifreeze. Thank god, i was already in front of her house.. It look like someone shot the freakin radiator... antifreeze everywhere:eek:.. FML....Well, what am i supposed to do at 9pm.. NOTHING...

So monday morning, when most people are planning their festivities, i'm calling a tow truck.. Since this shit only happens to me, it had to be on a holiday..Not a mechanic open.. not one.

So i have the truck brought back to bayside where i live, but since its a holiday, and you'd expect people to be gone for the holiday weekend!!!!
NO, not a chance.. Not a freakin parking spot anywhere.. at this point , i'm gonna take a hostages...

The tow truck dropped the car off at the entrance to the clearview expressway.. Literally on the on ramp.. so i find a nice place in the shade to put the car..At this point i have two options, get the shotgun and put this beast out of its misery, or fix the damn thing myself..Sooo I had a neighbor bring me to the auto parts store. thank god it was open..

Well after a new thermostat, water pump, and a serpentine belt later, i was back on the on ramp tackling this project..

Oh word to the wise.. when buying anything from a auto parts store, keep in mind, most of what you buy is likely to be manufactured and assembled in some far off country where QC isn't their strong suit.. After wrestling with the damn thermostat for a while, i finally realized that the rubber gasket that was assembled in katmandu, was on backwards... switched it, and it fit like a glove

On to the water pump..honestly, it wasnt that bad.. just a little patience and thought process, oh, and not to mention dealing with the bridges and tunnels cops that came by like 100 x's, asking me if i was done yet. One of them wanted to fine me.. He thought i was changing my oil... ok pal.. have another donut..

Once everything was said and done... it came out perfect... I did have an overheating issue for a while... Oh, and if you didnt know, and you havent performed this procedure yet, YOU HAVE TO PURGE THE SYTEM OF ALL AIR!!! it will continue to over heat and cause nothing but headches.. After a few cycles of warming up and cooling down, and also topping off any low levels of AF, you should be golden..

So here's the lesson for the day...Never help a pregnant woman with a treadmill at 9pm...JK, love you Jessica, and secondly, never let a car engine scare you.. Man created the machine, not the other way around.. make that car your BIT*H :slapfight:...

Good night guys..

It's all good.. At least i have more than a few brain cells to know how to do the install.. most people would've waited for the mechanic to bend them over, and...well..;) charge them about $400-$500 to do the job.. labor intensive..

Not this chump..lololol:thumbsup:

Good for you.

Unless it's under warranty I will not take a vehicle to a mechanic. I can screw it up just as good myself. :D
I love working on my vehicles and knowing that it is done right.

128,000.. Still going strong..To me, a water pump is a minor issue.. I really should do a radiator flush to be on the safe side.. Dont need a clogged water jacket.. Then we got problems

What kind of problems were you having prior to it failing? I've been chasing issues with my cooling system....a 180 t-stat, new cap, flush and refill, nothing is helping. '02 V8 WJ , runs 180 all day long until you get stuck at a long light. will gradually creep to 210. Slow to come back down after reaching that point. about a 15* F difference in temps between upper and lower hoses.

is your fan working? if you have the electric fan its prbably the relay gone bad, pretty common, if you have clutch fan you might need to have the clutch replaced, or a combination of the two

Well okay, i see your profile indicates two different address.. Which area do you normally live in.. NJ or FL...

You may have a circulation issue in the radiator.. Partially clogged.
Honestly i heard a very slight whining coming from the engine compartment. Indicative of a water pump about to go bad..
