What do I do with all there's Gears?

Si I was wondering, why my jeep with automatic transmission is able to be shifted to different gears, at least five I believe. I mostly use it in drive but I have yet to understand what gears 1-4 do. Correct me if Im wrong but is the lower the gear the less power you're using and the less gas you burn, hence saving more gas. I thought this but my friend says it doesn't work like that but he wasn't able to explain to me what was the use of the different gears.

Nothing is different from a manual to an automatic except that auto shifts for you. It's the same for a bicycle. When your in first you pedal real fast and go no where, right? The higher the bigger the gear, the less power needed to go higher speeds. Hence, the need for a transmission in the first place.

If you leave it in [1] then try and normally accelerate, it pushes the engine harder to spin a small gear. So no, lower does not mean less power.

Drive around in your car with first gear all day, and report back on what you find out!

A Powerglide really would make it all so much easier to understand.

Use that howitworks link, good stuff :) And no your friend is silly, ask him if his transmission is running? If so . . . well you know

If you get bored with that automatic tutorial check out CVT's :) Some complex designs, I just cant see those being widely used on anything outside of John Deers though! Although the Patriot has one I think?
