Might as well call it a Mercedes Grand Cherokee

The more articles I read, the more I realize that the WK2 GC is more a Mercedes than it is a Jeep.

The WK2 GC was built on the Mercedes ML platform. It share a lot of parts and technology with the ML such as the 4 wheel independent suspension, W5A580 transmission, ACC, Quadra-Lift, Quadra-Trac I, sound dampening, etc, etc.

We might as well call the WK2 a Mercedes Grand Cherokee.:p

I think it's really cool that we have so many Mercedes parts and technology in our WK2s:thumbsup: Thoughts?

if Im not mistaken....its on a platform originally developed by Jeep...but tweaked in a joint venture by both Merc and Jeep. Merc took plenty from ChryCo...including millions in cash and left them for dead....pretty much bled the coffers dry.

This is well known and the main reason for me staying with Jeep. I had 3 consecutive Grand Cherokees and wanted a change but I was sold once I heard they were codeveloped.
It sure drives like a Mercedes now but with off road capability.

IMO the new ML has the diesel option, ZF-8 transmission and superior dealer service network going for it. Otherwise, the Overland wins out and is priced to move, and for MY2013 will have diesel and the ZF-8, too.

I don't agree with "superior dealer service network". I've never been impressed with MB service and post warranty it's easier to find anyone to service a Jeep.

I do agree agree with wanting the MY2013 GC diesel.

I couldnt disagree more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anytime I have had to service my merc it has been in a top rate facility, with a loaner of my choice{cls, slk, e 550s} not a beat up mini van, scheduled when I needed it, and even offered to pick up my merc and do routine maitenace while Im at work and have it returned to me with a full tank of gas and a wash and wax, and I have only had a few warranty issues but they went above and beyond without any hassle and my word was the law.

I've been using Mercedes dealer repair facilities since 1981 and find 90 percent or more to be clearly superior and the rest to be mediocre. Even the worst, however, are better than the worst authorized Jeep shops we've used since 1994.

The rub: Mercedes shops take everything from you but your first born child for simple stuff like 50k mile inspections/lubes. On the other hand, if you hunt around for a good Jeep shop -- they still exist -- you'll get decent service at a fair price.

I've also dabbled with MB and BMW since the early 70s. For example, I had to take my 98 SLK back to the dealer three times to have a steering linkage rattle fixed, the last visit it spent weeks at the dealer, no loaner, poor service, mediocre results. The vehicles suspension was never right. I've had three recalls done on the vehicle at two different dealers, two done poorly. I seem to alway be able to find good quality Jeep service shops locally, but for Mercedes I have to drive 75 miles to see anyone decent (BMW is similar, but I happen to live near an enthusiast shop). The Jeep dealers in this area have provided better quality service than the three MB dealers I had the pleasure of visiting for service. My carpool buddy ended up with an expensive MB lemon sedan mid 70s, never got satisfaction. Talk about a money pit...

One of my work friends retired and went into the MB and BMW service business because they could charge big bucks for work that costs very little... because... well most individuals that own these brands have come to expect to have to shell out big bucks for anything... as he said, if their rates are not high, the customer thinks the service is sub par. He made a killing (also did quality work).

Just saying that there is much name brand marketing about, and both MB and BMW are master marketeers....

With all due respect, you DO pay for that though. Maybe they don't give you an actual invoice for it, but you ARE paying for it.

Absolutely I agree with you Marlin and most are not buying Mercs as a "value" purchase but honesty to me the superior service that I get is well worth the price premium. JMHO
