Noisey shock or rear axel?

I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee with 87,000 miles in near perfect condition both body and mechanical; BUT, I have a noise coming from my left rear wheel that is driving me crazy. I thought it was the shocks but new shocks only temporarily fixed the problem; the noise is back. Can anyone help me find the root cause of this irritation???

could be a sway bar bushing.

What kind of noise is it? The shock bolts can give problems many times. Don't know the specification for new bolts, but certainly someone else will chime in. There are more threads about this with the bolt P/N.

Check shock bolts and make sure they are tight, really tight.

Shock bolts are the easiest thing to check first. The uppers tend to rattle because the shoulder of the bolt isn't thick enough. I got replacement higher grade bolts for mine from my local Fastenal and torqued the hell out of them. I was getting a "thunk" noise everytime I hit a bump. The ball joint at the top of the rear 3 link is notorious for failing too...and while you're under there, check the sway bushings and make sure all the bolts are snug.
