Purchasing a leftover 2011 or new 2012 - Need to tow; which motor?
 
I am definitely purchasing a left over 2011 or ordering a 2012 at the end of August.

The question I have is I will eventually need to tow and I am wondering if the v8 is a necessity or if the v6 will suffice.


Two things I will be towing:

19' Bayliner (Boat)
19' - 24' Camper

Yup - Hemi.

I love my V6 but I don't tow anything that size. Trust me, you'll want the Hemi for what you are towing.

I ask how far are you towing?

If only short distances, the V6 would suffice, but longer haul, Hemi for sure.

ANYTHING OVER 2,000 LBS WIll need the Hemi.

With factory hitch you get tow/haul button to optimize the engine/transmission/cooling for towing duty.

You also get automatic sway control which will apply brakes to just one front wheel at a time to straighten out a swaying load.

Hemi. Get a 2011 and you easily get at least 4k off the sticker price.

GET THE HEMI FOR SURE! I'm in the same boat as you. I'm deciding between a 2011 and 2012 but honestly right now there are no real incentives on the 2011s aside from the 1K lease loyalty and 1K lease conquest rebates. I do qualify for the $500 military rebate which will apply to the 2011 or 2012s and since there are no rebates right now, I can get the same price on a 2012 ordered as a can a leftover 2011 on the lot. As a result of that I'm leaning heavily toward the 2012. Getting it this soon will allow you to drive the thing for a whole year before real depreciation sets in vs. losing 5K right off the bat once you drive the 2011 off the lot. Also, the 2012 gets the 6-spd (reprogrammed 5-spd) transmission which although small nets a slight bump (13/20 vs. 13/19) in fuel efficiency on the HEMI 4X4. My dealer will give me the same deal on a 2012 as a 2011 which is $1K below invoice using my USAA buying program. The 2012 offers a few other options like the polished or chrome wheels and a few other color choices (i'm wanting to see what true blue looks like). Either way it's a great SUV...just test drove a Rugged Brown Summit 4X4 HEMI today with my wife and we were both impressed (she doesn't dig the brown or the summit because of the saddle so it'll probably be light/frost beige leather for us). Either way let us know what you decide!

Have a V-6, am quite pleased with it, but if I were going to tow much of anything, I'd have bought the Hemi.

The Pentastar is just fine when all you're hauling is the vehicle itself, but throw a ton or two behind it, and life is going to become much more deliberate. Go for the V-8.

I towed my 19 foot travel trailer (3700 lbs) from California to Yellowstone and back last month. The V6 was adequate and averaged 12.9 MPG overall. Similar MPG to my old Ram with the 4.7 V8.

Without the trailer I average 24 mpg on long road trips. Like others are saying, it depends on the size and weight of your pull. I kept it in 4th on level ground and 3rd on the mountain passes. My trailer also has dual axels, so extra braking power. I also have a weight distribution hitch and sway control.

As with everything, it depends on what your situation, driving habits and requirements are.

If you're towing most of the time, hilly roads and the load is heavy, the V8 may be the better choice. For occasional towing a utility trailer or medium sized trailer/boat the V6 has enough power and torque (in my opinion.)

When you drive reasonably (no really excessive speeds, HARD stops and flying over rough roads) I've found that vehicles that I've had (all with towing packages) get the job done - and I've pulled some pretty large/heavy loads with vehicles that had less power/torque and sophistication.

So far, I like the V6 and hope it keeps me happy.

There are incentives. I got the 500 military plus 4 grand off the sticker. The USAA pricing wasn't even in the same ball park as what I got. Pressure the dealer and you will get a good deal.

yep, HEMI!!!! yanking a boat of that size out of the water and up a boat launch is another consideration that I would look at.
