Test drove the 3.0L Diesel today!

Test drove the CRD 3.0L diesel Grand Cherokee Laredo today.

Push that stater button and the diesel springs to life! She grumbles a little like the V8 and settles down to a much quieter diesel than i ever expected.
Bonnet closed it purred beautifully, with no clatter of a traditional diesel engine. Less than a VW tiguan, Less than a Land Rover Freelander.

Open the bonnet, and she stares you in the face much like a V8. still no clatter, but she's louder and yet the engine sound is crisp and sharp.

Jump in the car and close the door and it's VERY VERY quiet. you know it's a diesel, but it has an aggressive sound that gives you the impression that it means business. I was convinced....The car was black, I think that topped it off.

Foot on the throttle, and POW! it leaped away like a greyhound at the races. I'd hit 50km/h before i even realized... and that sound! It's a cross between a diesel and a V8 and yet as smooth as the V6.

Between 0 and 30 km/h you really know it's a diesel, and can hear it, yet it sounds refined (bit like it's muffled). Once over the 40km/h mark she opens up and growls and sounds powerful and super torqy, It feels it too with plenty of power and it continues through the range well without lag. At 100km/h it's super quiet and the 5 speed box matches it well for Australian conditions. you can talk to each other very easily and still hear the engine, it's more than a purr but less than a growl.....a unique sound that grew on me in an instant.

I'm sold big time, and given the amount of cars i've driven in the last 3 weeks, thats something.

Brilliant Job Jeep.......I'm in.

Yes indeed, it's ordered, made and waiting for a boat so they tell me.

Which one did you go for? Laredo seems to have enough bits and I like the cloth seats over the leather. My mate picked up a dark blue limited this week. There are still some from the last shipment but they are fast disappearing.

Cheers

Jim

My wife and myself drove one of these laredo yesterday, very impressive. You sure can fell the power and the price point for the laredo is hard to go past.

hey zzkazu......thought i would pop in and see what the fuss is.....was doing research last night and discovered that our model has the benz auto in it from previous years......my 2003 jeep had a benz engine and auto so i love the fact its a benz tranny.......looks like merc benz added a bit of their handling to the chassis too....

Not sure about north American pricing but down under it's +$AUD5,000 over V6 pentastar. Same price as V8... It is an option on all models down under whereas V8 is an option only on Limited and Overland.

Great choice guys. I've had my diesel for around 6 weeks and have put a chip in from Europe and removed the two mufflers at the rear . The result is there is no hesitation off the line and 20% increase in performance ( seat of the pants stuff ). In addition to an improvement in economy and across the board improvement in the smoothness and throttle response. 0-100 a would think it would spank the petrol V6 and would hold its own to the V8. Great job jeep although still has build quality issue as I have had 3 previous jeeps so expect this to be an issue anyway By the way there is hardly any noticeable increase in noise from the removal of the mufflers. Much more to gain with better throttle response anyway.

More details please...

As far as I know there are no chips designed for this new engine.
My Jeep dealer said that someone surely will come up with solution but they don't know when it will be available.

So please write something more about the device, it's characteristic etc.

From what i have read, the Diesel was quicker or as quick as the Hemi v8 in standard form anyway, so if you are saying 20% increase then it would easily spank the V8 as well.

Do you have a link or any other info on the chip you used?
Would definitely be interested if it increases performance as well as efficiency, Where is the downside?
