2011 GC Trailer Hitch - $599 - really?

I got a quote from my dealer to install the OEM hitch on my 2011 Limited. $599 parts/2.5hrs labor. Seems a little high.

A couple points set off a red flag for me:

1. Dealer could not address my question about the pre-wired harness I see terminating just inside the rear bumper. Is this for the hitch, or some other purpose? Do they really need to install a NEW harness?

2. He said no bumper modification (cut out) is required to install the hitch. I explained I do not want an aftermarket hitch (below-bumper variety). I expect the OEM insert. I checked the rear fairing - needs to be cut-out to accept the insert, right??

Can anyone shed some light on my red-flags?

Thx

Mine wasn't going to budge from $485 untill I asked him how long it had been since his last CAT scan. Showed him multiple sources for OEM parts on the web that had the exact hitch for %50 less then his quote.

1. There are variables. I've seen a few that had the harness run, but it was not yet sctivated in the TIPM. I wasn't that fortunate and had to install the harness and have the dealer activate the circuit. From the ones I've seen, it's a one piece harness that runs from the TIPM (under the hood) all the way to the connector plate on the hitch. How many wires are on the harness that you discovered?

2. Yes, the bumper must be cut to use the OEM hitch. The trim bezel is used to help disguise the hitch.

There are (7) wires/contacts in the connector terminated inside the rear bumper.

There is a capped connector attached. The (7) contacts are arranged in a circular hub and spoke pattern.

Sounds like a 7-pin trailer harness to me...

List price on the hitch is $233. Not every Jeep has the wiring but it sounds like yours does. The hardest part of the job is cutting the hole in the bumper.Your dealer sounds like a real winner.

Thanks for the link. That's a big help. I will certainly challenge the service monkey on harness/labor chunk. Looks like price range should be more like $300-$400 range installed.

I am worried. The Dodge dealer sat just adjacent to the Jeep dealer. Jeep dealer in last year sold out 100% the Dodge dealer; everything under the one roof now. From discussion with my Sales guys, they left some long-term Jeep service employees behind :( I had been buying my Jeeps from them since mid-1990s :(

Looks like the Dodge service guys do not know their new product very well.

Does not bode well for any odd diagnostics I may need. Ugh!

However, I did call another nearby Jeep dealer - quoted $585, and could also not answer my harness inquiry.

Got the hitch installed today.

It did take some convincing, even getting the service monkey to climb under my Jeep to acknowledge I was pre-wired.

He showed me the kit that comes with the receiver - included the harness - along with the 7pin & 4pin terminals. The guy said, "It just comes this way."

So, they subtracted the cost of the harness, and adjusted the labor:

Receiver: $213.00
Connector: $46.86
Labor: 2 hours @$68.00

My only disappointment was the hitch did not include a receiver cover (simple rubber variety, or flip-type I have seen on many installs). I guess I had assumed the cover would be included.

Glad I poked around here, saved me a few bucks!

Thanks for the tips guys. I just purchased a curt hitch and wiring kit ($121 for the hitch, $27 for the wiring kit) from amazon. I didn't go with the mopar unit because I didn't want the dealer cutting the bumper. I installed this myself - very simple and the wiring was a plug and play.

I'm currently looking at a 2011 limited with V8 and every option I'm looking for but the hitch. The dealer is quoting me $750 installed which is ridiculous if it really retails around $250. The other question I have is, why does the jeep have the Tow/Hitch button when it does not have the Hitch tow pkg? Can I assume it is wired to accept the hitch since it does have the tow button?

That's the TOW/HAUL switch. It modifies transmission behavior; it doesn't have anything to do with the wires to the hitch. I think it's included in all vehicles that have the hemi engine.

I understand, that's why I'm curious why it would be included when it doesn't have the option to even tow/haul coming from the factory.
