Factory sub Replacement...FINALLY

Ok....after posting several times, and after getting my threads hijacked several times by some dude wanting to sell his JL audio stealthbox for $600 (Mind you...you would still need an amp)...I finally was able to figure out and install a replacement factory sub...

Here is what I bought:
1) JL Audio XD 300 amp
2) JL Audio ZR800-CW subwoofer
3) (4) packs of Dynamat 10415 Xtreme Speaker Kit
4) Bullz Audio Amplifier Wiring Kit 8G 1000 Watts
5) JL Audio HD-RLC Remote Level Control

Grand total $515!!!

The amp is really small, so I placed it under the rear passenger seat. It takes high level inputs so I just tapped the left and right off the factory sub terminal.

When you remove the factory sub out of the sub box, you wanna line the inside with dynamat, then place the speaker in. Theres a hole behind the sub box, where I took some old airconditioner foam, and stuffed the compartment with foam to avoid any metal rattle. Then I put a piece of 1/8" plywood cut it to size and placed it behind the sub box. after screwing it all in, I still got a little rattle from the front of the plastic sub box. I stuffed some additional foam around the box, and put more dynamat on the outside. the Panel fit perfectly on top of the enclosure

Then, I ran the remote bass control knob to under the armrest along with a cutoff switch for the amp.

After all is said in done, the bass sounds spectacular, looks facytory, and i have bass control, all for $515! You could also save 100 bucks and get teh JL JX250 amp, which works well also. But I liked the digitial style of the XD300. small, and doesn't get as hot.

I'm not saying teh stealthbox isnt nice...would have saved me and my buddy a lot of trial and error with the rattle...but i think its way too overpriced.

I'll post pics in a little bit.

PS....I bought all my stuff from techronics dot com. VERY responsiuve, good pricing!!!

Many thanks. Its a simple setup. But the sound is SO MUCH BETTER. People said JL is overpriced. but to be honest...its def quality. and compliments the rest of alpine sound quite well. Very happy!

did you by chance measure the mounting depth of the factory box while you had it out of the car? i'm curious if any other 8" subs would fit in the box. got any pics of the factory sub for comparison? or of the amp setup? this looks pretty sweet so far, and I'm interested in doing the same.

I forget the exact measurements, but I do know the depth of the jl zr800 I got, is the max depth allowed. There are actually a limited amount of decent subs with a small depth... Check crutchfield for the specific depth.

I have the factory sub in a box, I'll try and measure it tommorrow....

Can you post up a pic of where you mounted the RLC switch?

FWIW, the ZR800 has a mounting depth of 3.5". It is quite thin.

Is there any room between where the sub mounts and the back of the grille over it?

Hey Guys...

Not to rehash an old thread of mine....

But just to update everyone...someone who got into my car got a little friendly with the gain knob. Needless to say the speaker blew.

Rather then replace the speaker in the factory sub enclosure again, I decided to splurge and replace it with a STealthbox.

SO.....if anyone is interested in the factory enclosure, send me a PM. the enclosure has been fully lined with Dynamat if it intrigues anyone...

Thanks again!
